[Bug 682262] New: Subpixel rendering gone after updating to Firefox 4.0.0
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=682262 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=682262#c0 Summary: Subpixel rendering gone after updating to Firefox 4.0.0 Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.4 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Minor Priority: P5 - None Component: Firefox AssignedTo: wolfgang@rosenauer.org ReportedBy: max@novell.com QAContact: qa@suse.de CC: jw@novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- On 11.4, Firefox uses very good subpixel antialiasing (far less blurred than the packages from the subpixel repo on opensuse-community.org), but after updating to the MozillaFirefox-4.0.0-0.3.1 and mozilla-xulrunner20-2.0.0-0.3.1 packages, the antialiasing is reverted to grey scale. I'll attach two magnified screenshots of font rendering examples taken from Firefox before and after updating MozillaFirefox, mozilla-js20, and mozilla-xulrunner20 and restarting Firefox. No other changes were done in between. Was the subpixel rendering removed intentionally, or did the upstream default change? Is this a compile-time thing or can it be changed at runtime? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

From a technical point of view I think it's the right approach to add the patch because it makes Firefox behave like all the other apps on openSUSE and it's font rendering can be modified by replacing the freetype library as it works for every other application. Also recent cairo versions behave that way and

People who use a subpixel enabled freetype are reporting that Firefox' font rendering looks perfect now (please note that this is a subjective statement always).
I tried the subpixel enabled freetype stack from opensuse-community.org and it looked much worse than the greyscale antaliasing FF is using now. One example is that straight vertical lines get no aa in the examples I posted before. With the subpixel-enabled libs the same lines are needlessly surrounded by subpixels resulting in more blurring and visible colored borders around the characters. BTW, when switching between RGB and BGR in the gnome-appearance-properties dialog, there is no visible change, which makes me think that something is broken there, and the bad results I am getting are because the wrong color order is used for my monitor and it can't be changed. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

branch the freetype2 from opensuse -> edit the spec file, build with subpixel enabled.
Done, and restarted Firefox, but the result is identical to the packages from opensuse-community.org .
install it -> and select a font like droid as systemfont - log out/in
My desktop dpesn't have the concept of a "system font". -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Then your theory about the rgb/bgr might be what needs looking into.
Meanwhile I ruled that out by editing ~/.fonts.conf . When I set the rgba parameter to "bgr" instead of the default "rgb", it is clearly visible that the subpixels are at the wrong side of the respective pixels.
Btw what DE are you using?
No DE, only a window manager: fvwm2 -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
