https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=227923 Summary: Unable to add Samba users Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: 32bit OS/Version: SuSE Linux 10.1 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Network AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: DREbs_lnx@swissernst.com QAContact: qa@suse.de This bug has a long story: - I observed it since Suse Linux 10.0 - I reported it since Suse Linux 10.1 - Nothing was ever done, to improve the matter And this is, what I mean: - No way is provided, to enter Samba users via a graphical interface: Yast does not provide any means to do it The second way, via Personal Settings -> Samba -> users, does not work - Of course, one can add users via smbpasswd -a ..., but I think, that Linux should become an alternative to buying MS's Vista. Therefore, Linux should absolutely try to simplify the installation procedures for small networks, as they become more and more common use. As per now, it is still very complex, installing such small networks. Another problem for instance, I'm trying to solve, is to make my hp officejet d125xi available to other network users - with no success up to now. Most users I know, even IT personal, just revert to a window solution, and leave Linux behind them - maybe for ever. AFAIK it is possible to create Samba accounts for LDAP users. Yes, that's possible (only when managing LDAP Users).
Unfortunatelly I don't know more about samba-support for users. Ralf, Lars, do you think this is worth to become valid feature in some next release? Valid feature? Hm, that's someting (T)PM would have to decide. Valid feature request -> Probably yes. Maybe Lars wants to comment as well.

Like another user noted, if Linux wants to get serious about being a general server over MS, then this graphical stuff needs to be available, intuitive, and work. Until then, people setting up a home network or a network for a small office will be stuck, frustrated, and unlikely to recommend using Linux to a neighbor or friend. It should be easy to configure out of the box. Same with Printers. The fact is most people use Windows as work stations. Linux as a server needs to make it just as easy to use as MS Server. I am hoping eventually easier.
