[Bug 960474] New: Screen and audio blanking on its own
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=960474 Bug ID: 960474 Summary: Screen and audio blanking on its own Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Distribution Version: 13.2 Hardware: x86-64 OS: openSUSE 13.2 Status: NEW Severity: Minor Priority: P5 - None Component: X.Org Assignee: xorg-maintainer-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com Reporter: kerijan2003@gmail.com QA Contact: xorg-maintainer-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- I've been waiting to see if there was a resolution for my problem, but unfortunately, there hasn't been. So, here I am. My desktop is a Gateway DX4885-UR2D and is using an Intel HD 4600 graphics onboard GPU. On Monday, 21 December, I was doing my updates through zypper, Code: zypper ref;zypper up There wasn't any out of the ordinary updates, with maybe the exception of xf86-video-intel, which I didn't think anything about. Until later (at around 6PM, almost 8 hours later)! I was watching videos using vlc and my monitor and HDMI TV both blanked and the sound stopped. Thinking that there had been a power outage (but that was a false assumption I would realize later as everything else that ran off electricity was still working). I powered down my desktop through its power button, and restarted. I was still under the assumption that it was a power outage at this point, until it did it again. This time, I noticed that everything else was still powered. My thoughts went to thinking that it might be a software issue, and rebooted into a runlevel 3 through grub2. I reverted the aforementioned xf86-video-intel to the previous version and rebooted back into runlevel 5. It had been for naught, because it continued to blank out without sound. Rebooted back into runlevel 3 and tried to logically figure out the problem. At the same time, I was working on another computer, so I had stopped doing anything on the desktop (wasn't typing or using the mouse). It blanked out again. A tap on the keyboard brought the screen back. It then clicked on me. I started a timer on my cell, and found out that it blanked out after 10 minutes. I tried that a few times just to verify. I rebooted back into runlevel 5, and started up vlc. It blanked out after 10 minutes. All I had to do was move the mouse and the screen and sound came back. The movie hadn't stopped or anything. I also noticed that it would revise the amount of time to blank, from 10 down to 5 minutes. I've checked through every configuration setting, whether it was vlc or Configure Desktop, or even through Yast. I did find that upowerd was running (which it shouldn't because I've always had it disabled), and stopped it (through Yast). At this point, I'm wondering if anyone else is having this problem. And even if not, does someone have any ideas as to which direction I should be looking at next? -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Well, if you had read what I had said, you would have realized that I had said it blanked out as well when in init3. I wasn't using any video player in that init level. This is correct/intentional behavior and likely has nothing to do with scereen blanking when running vlc (see i.e https://superuser.com/questions/152347/change-linux-console-screen-blanking-... for details). So, it's not the media player in any way. And I don't know how much more concise I could be. Applications, which want to prevent screen blanking in running desktop environment needs to notify said environment, some video players (afaik also vlc) even allow more precise setting (see configuration of vlc). True, I didn't mention which desktop (KDE4), but the problem doesn't only happen when I'm in the desktop (init5) as has been clearly mentioned.

I did - despite your rather lengthy write-up. I figured the problem you were concerned was the screen blanking during video playback - which is indeed annoying. I was not aware that you didn't know about screen power saving. But even if you didn't, you could have come aware of it through my comment.

As Martin mentioned, screen blanking is a general feature to save power when the machine is not used (ie by mouse or keyboard input). In the days of CRTs screen blanking was also used to preserve the phosphor of the screen. This is why the text console also blanks after a while. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

#!/bin/sh xset dpms 0 0 0 xset -dpms xset s noblank
I consider this post [SOLVED].
Sure, this works if you don't want any DPMS (screen power saving) or blanking at all. Normally, you want the screen to blank when idle, however. Just not when playing a movie or giving a presentation. In this situation your player or presentation tool should put your desktop in presentation mode. The desktop then performs exactly these actions and prevents the screen saver / screen lock from kicking in. If you need to find a solution which works for you you need to ask at the forums. if you believe there is a real bug somewhere you should report it here. Whether there is a bug in either the KDE desktop or vlc I cannot say right off hand. To determine this, the ticket was why this got reassigned to the vlc maintainer. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

From this angle, I can't see any bug here... and the power settings are what need to be configured (as the reporter did)
