I can understand if suse 10.2 doesn't support this venerable thingie and x and graphical installation don't work, but complete installation failure is a bit extreme. What happens is... * During the first installation phase, YaST2 complains that the graphics card isn't powerful enough and reverts to text mode, which is all fine and dandy. * After reboot, when the 'continue' phase of YaST installation starts, YaST2 is against started but this time it doesn't revert to text mode. It renders the screen but fails to draw any text or response to input. Switching to other vt works. Switching to vt2 and killing it makes things continue but it ends up at login prompt where root login is prohibited (no password set yet) and no other user added. I don't think clgd5446 support is anywhere near critical, so rejecting this bug is fine too but please consider at least making phase#2 use detection result from phase#1 (ie. if phase#1 was done in console, do the same for phase#2). The first one was save_y2logs result before the initial reboot (still on dvd and tmpfs). During the first boot from the harddisk, y2 second phase failed as before. After yast failure, gnome greeter got started but repeatedly crashed. In the console, login is impossible because no password is set and no account is created. After rebooting the machine into single mode save_y2logs is executed again. This looks like a problem in the vesa driver. According to the log the kernel is not able to boot with a framebuffer console therefore the installation procedure decided to use the vesa driver. In the first stage of the installation the problem was: Stage [call]: =================================== |-- No Framebuffer available: Using vesa driver |-- TestX: XOpenDisplay failed |-- UI_args: Running in fullscreen mode |-- X-Server couldn't be started, falling back to ncurses which allows you to install in ncurses mode. In the second stage the X-Server was able to start with the vesa driver which is weird because the same configuration file is used compared to the first stage. In case you want to help us investigate the vesa driver issue, you could try to run the vesa driver also after installation by copying /etc/X11/xorg.conf.install to /etc/X11/xorg.conf (backup xorg.conf first!). I need to debug this. I think I've got a clgd5446 in my collection so I should be able to test this problem, too. I will assign this to me as a reminder to check the VESA driver. On the other hand the native driver for this chip *should* work. If this works the installation should also work fine by using the native driver when adding "acceleratedx=1" to the kernel boot commandline at the beginning of the installation. Reassigning to Egbert. Egbert, you should know, that we disabled shadowfb for vesa driver during installation, since it has been broken for openSUSE 10.2. Anyway, these cards are easy to get thru ebay. The laguna series is a lot harder to find. I managed to get a 5465 the other day. I'm curious: the problems above seem to be related to the VESA driver.
