PDF test file for printing
Thanx for looking into this and for your hints.
The reason for substituting pdftops by another renderer is as follows: Under OS
15.1 I realized that certain documents needed a lot of time to be printed by my
Kyocera Ecosys FS-1300D PS printer; this could be much improved by changing the
renderer.
Typically, this concerned PDF files containig a mixture of vector and bitmap
graphics. This problem is known, see
/usr/share/doc/packages/cups-filters/README from package
cups-filters-1.25.0-3.3.1.x86_64 , section "POSTSCRIPT PRINTING RENDERER AND
RESOLUTION SELECTION".
This problem persists under OS 15.3 using the default cups setup. As an example
I attach a single paged PDF file "test.pdf". Printing this file on my Kyocera
FS-1300D PS printer via
lpr -o pdftops-renderer=pdftops test.pdf
takes about 870 s. Using the cups debug mode reveals that during this printing
process pdftops is effectively called via
pdftops -level1 -origpagesizes -nocenter -r 1200 -optimizecolorspace test.pdf
test.ps
(last two file arguments exchanged by myself for testing purposes). This
command takes less than 1 s on my linux box. However, test.ps has a size of 270
MB. Hence, the 870 s observed for printing test.pdf are probably due to data
transfer to and / or processing by the printer. (The printer is connected via
100 mbit/s ethernet, it has 544 MB of RAM.)
In contrast,
pdftocairo -level3 -origpagesizes -nocenter -r 1200 -ps test.pdf test.ps
yields test.ps with a size of only 146 kB. Since I cannot use pdftocairo with
the default cups setup of OS 15.3, I tried the two other renderers mentioned in
/usr/share/doc/packages/cups-filters/README: mupdf and gs. Of these, mupdf does
not yield any output (I didn't inspect this case), but gs succeeded: For the
command
lpr -o pdftops-renderer=gs test.pdf
printing takes about 70 s.
Under OS 15.1 I used pdftocairo also as renderer for a current Kyocera PS
printer (ECOSYS P2040dn). However, some printouts showed artifacts. Bottom
line: Changing the renderer is not always the optimal solution, but is
definitely worth giving a try.
