Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: Milestone 1 Platform: i686 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.1 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: novell@rvp.endjunk.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.1b4) Gecko/20090426 SUSE/3.5b4-4.1 Firefox/3.5b4 Actually for openSUSE 11.2 Milestone 1 but 11.2 was not a menu choice. I have a Dell Dimension 8400 upgraded to the latest bios (A09) and recently installed with with 4GB of matched HP DDR2 ram. On bootup system recognized 3.2gb of the memory. I installed the 2.6.29-6-PAE kernel however again only 3.2gb was recognized. I installed kernel source and kernel development tools and made sure to specify the 4gb option in memory (using make cloneconfig it had defaulted to the 64gb option) but again only 3.2gb was recognized. I'm uncertain whether this is a milestone 1 issue or a hardware issue with the Dimension 8400 but thought it should be mentioned. uname -a : Linux d8400 2.6.29-6-i530 #1 SMP PREEMPT Sun May 10 06:29:24 EDT 2009 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux free -m : d8400:~ # free -m total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 3293 1171 2121 0 288 643 -/+ buffers/cache: 239 3053 Swap: 2055 0 2055 I am available to run any command you think necessary. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Boot PAE kernel and do a free -m 2. 3. Actual Results: Only 3.2GB of the 4gb is recognized. Expected Results: 4gb should have been recognized..for example: ~$ free -m total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 4015 396 3619 0 15 132 -/+ buffers/cache: 248 3767 Swap: 3867 0 3867 -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I don't think we want to find out your hardware problems on such a (hopefully) rare combination. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The pc doesn't support running x86_64 or I'd have x86_64 on it. I've tested each of the milestones up to milestone 6 to see if anything changed. Guess I've just been wasting my time. This is the 3rd or 4th bug report I've submitted where the end solution appears to be "We are just going to ignore it and hope it goes away." (one specific example was a bug report I submitted about the radeon driver not allowing desktop effects to be enabled on one of the milestones when the previous milestone worked fine with it). Why should I or other testers keep submitting bug reports if the answer is always going to be "I don't have a clue what's causing it so we are gonna close it and mark it resolved because we want our resolved stats to look good and a bunch of folks didn't submit the same error." -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

This is a limitation of 32 bits systems wich only can use the firsts 3,2GB of memory. http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B946003&x=15&y=14 Regards -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

There is only one memory address space and it must be shared between RAM and memory-mapped i/o devices. A 32-bit system will always have a hole at the end of the address space, even if there is physical memory there. The size of the hole varies by system, but it will still be there. Some systems may choose to map the RAM above the 4 GB mark in order to make it usable, but most won't since the OS needs to support full 64GB mode and the workstation versions of Windows don't do it. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
