[Bug 227525] New: Closing laptop lid on Dell D820 Duo 2 hangs linux
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=227525 Summary: Closing laptop lid on Dell D820 Duo 2 hangs linux Product: SUSE Linux 10.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: SuSE Linux 10.1 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: rls@sgi.com QAContact: qa@suse.de CC: rls@sgi.com Closing the laptop lid on my D820 causes linux to hang immediately. This happens at pretty much any time - during the boot process, as well as after the system is up and I'm logged in. It also happens on the installation kernel - except for the one with acpi disabled. Unfortunately, even though I can install acpi disabled, the resulting system won't boot - the screen just goes blank. The machine has a dual core 2 cpu, 2GB of main memory, WUXGA TFT display and an 80 GB SATA hard disk. I recall having seen a post somewhere about being unable to boot with acpi=off not working when booting from a SATA disk, since the disk doesn't get recognized for some reason. I've tried this in various combinations, with and without dual-core enabled, during the boot phase and after everything is up and I'm logged in, on the install kernels for Suse 10.0 and 10.1, it all fails. But it works fine under Windows, and in the install kernel when acpi is turned off. I've also had acpi configuration files get clobbered due to having to do a hard shutdown after a hang. This may be due to an xfs null-file problem. Unfortunately, the "repair" install option couldn't resolve that problem for some reason, so I ended up doing a reinstall. This has never been a problem on my previous laptop, a Dell D600. I've encountered other problems with this laptop (only under linux) that seem to be related to smp, but disabling dual-cpus doesn't solve this problem. I suspect it may be related to the x86_64 architecture, as various posts in the internet have suggested. This is a pretty nasty problem, since there are plenty of reasons to want to close the lid of a laptop on a regular basis. It doesn't seem reasonable to have to reboot each time I need to close the laptop lid. Even worse, if config files get screwed up as a result of going down hard, doing a reinstall after closing the lid is a real bummer. If you can let me know how I can get some debugging information, I'll be glad to gather it. If this were a sles altix system, I'd just load a debug kernel, and enter the debugger as soon as it hangs, and look around. But it isn't, and I've never built a debug kernel for a laptop or tried to debug it. If someone would like to point me in the right direction, I'll have at it. Thanks. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=227525 ------- Comment #2 from rls@sgi.com 2006-12-14 13:02 MST ------- I don't know. It does happen on 10.0 and 10.1. I just downloaded 10.2, and will try it there. Some additional information: I brought up the system with acpi=ht, and it worked ok during the boot process, which hadn't been the case before. But once X came up, closing the lid (or unplugging the AC adaper or plugging it back in) would hang. Also, using ctl-alt-f1 to switch to a terminal display worked ok, I could also close and open the lid without hanging the system. But switching back to X via ctrl-alt-f7 would hang. At that point, the system seemed to be responding, since pressing the power switch caused a normal shutdown. It was also possible to get back to X by restarting it. I then recompiled the kernel with CONFIG_ACPI_AC and CONFIG_ACPI_BUTTON turned off. With that kernel, closing the lid still hanged the system. Running with dual core turned off didn't change anything, either. However, when I boot the rebuilt kernel with acpi=ht, all the above-mentioned problems go away. So the problem can be worked around by recompiling the kernel with CONFIG_ACPI_AC and CONFIG_ACPI_BUTTON turned off, and booting with acpi=ht. This is unfortunately at the expense of acpi features and dual core (without acpi, only one cpu is recognized). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Howver, I would note that closing the lid during startup of the installation dvd will blank the screen, but opening the lid won't restore it. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

However when I know the IP, I can ssh from another box and shut the machine down. Killing the X server shows now reaction. I wonder how you can flag the defect as fixed, without understanding the problem? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
