[Bug 769346] New: Gnome system-settings printing unavailable by default
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=769346 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=769346#c0 Summary: Gnome system-settings printing unavailable by default Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.2 Version: Beta 2 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 12.2 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: GNOME AssignedTo: bnc-team-gnome@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: badshah400@gmail.com QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:13.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/13.0.1 The "Printers" module in system-settings in the GNOME desktop reports "Sorry! The system printing service doesn't seem to be available" when launched, and remains completely inactive, giving the illusion that printers cannot be added/removed/configured from this system. However, one can use YaST to add printers the usual way, and then the printers added also show up in this system-settings module, now also allowing one to configure the added printer as it should. Cups does not seem to be running though, because:- output of: ps ax | grep "cups" 5872 pts/0 S+ 0:00 grep --color=auto cups 3. When the Printer module is started it shows the follwoing prompt the first time:- "Restart locally running CUPS daemon" and presents Yes or No as options on the dialog box. I choose to click on Yes. Then it shows: "Rstarted the CUPS daemon. Waiting half a minute for the CUPS daemon to get ready to operate". After about 30 seconds, this prompt disappears and the printer module seems ready to work. But at this stage itself:- output of ps ax | grep cups 6001 ? Ss 0:00 /usr/sbin/cupsd -f 6127 pts/0 S+ 0:00 grep --color=auto cups ...and the "Printer" module in GNOME system settings also starts working. So it is the restart of the cups daemon by the YaST printer module that gets everything working. One believes that the cups daemon should be started at boot, but is not. Indeed, now if I reboot, the printer module in gnome system settings says "printing system not available" again. So it is really that cupsd is not getting started at boot time. Hope that helps. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Whether or not cupsd is started at boot time is a systemd issue but I cannot help regarding systemd issues.
Do we expect the default behaviour to get "yes, it should be started by default", when package is installed ? in that case, we should just add cups.service to systemd-presets-branding-openSUSE -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I do not know what the openSUSE policy is i.e. whether or not cupsd should be started at boot time by default for openSUSE 12.2.
Well, it is simple : should cups service is expected to be enabled when package is installed or not, or should it be enabled later by a tool (YaST, etc..) ?
I cannot help if something regarding systemd support in cups is wrong or missing or does no longer work.
I'm not asking you for fixing this stuff, but whetever if cupsd is expected to be enabled or not by default. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

For me personally it would be easiest if cupsd was still started during boot by systemd (same as with SysVinit). Atri Bhattacharya, your comment #4 item 3. therein indicates that the cups service was not enabled because you wrote that after reboot the cupsd was not running. Atri Bhattacharya, did you get an "Enable starting of the CUPS daemon during system boot" popup and did you responded with "Yes"? If you didn't get such a popup it indicates that there is an issue in lower-level parts of YaST (i.e. the "Service" module) which test whether or not a service is enabled (i.e. Service::Enabled("cups") in case of the printer module). If you got such a popup and you did respond with "Yes" but nevertheless after reboot the cupsd was not running it also indicates that there is an issue in the YaST "Service" module because the YaST printer modules calls Service::Enable("cups") and that shoudl do the right thing also for systemd. For SysVinit this worked all the time an still works for me. Only for systemd ther might be issues and if yes, I would file a separated bug report regarding the YaST "Service" module. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

But I am against a policy change for the cupsd - right now for openSUSE 12.2 because for openSUSE 12.2 it will cause major regressions (e.g. this bug report: system-config-printer is not prepared to show dialogs to the user to let him enable and start the cups service if cupsd is not running on localhost) and it is too late to find and fix all the regressions, - without thorough analysis and discussion because I miss a security analysis (e.g. what exactly is the security issue when a service is only accessible on localhost) and I miss a usability analsysis (how changes usability if the printing service is no longer ready-to-use by default) and I miss a discussion which includes relevant openSUSE and SLE experts and decision makers, - via Bugzilla because policy changes are never ever a bug and also no enhancement request (the opposite would be a bug: when the printing service is no longer ready-to-use by default, it would be a bug because then it would not work as intended according to our current policy for the cupsd). See also https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=749451#c2 bnc#752454 bnc#768570 http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Security_use_cases Marcus, I suggest that the security team proceeds first and foremost with bnc#752454 where nothing happened since more than 3 month because as far as I see it is a precondition that the request in bnc#752454 is rejected for a policy change that the printing service is no longer ready-to-use by default because without a ready-to-use printing service any request for easier usable printing-related functionality is in vain. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
