[Bug 278621] New: System time (clock) is not accurate.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=278621 Summary: System time (clock) is not accurate. Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: i586 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.2 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: KDE AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: mike_wells@cox.net QAContact: qa@suse.de The system time (clock) as displayed in KDE is losing aprroximately 5 seconds per day. I essentially never reboot, so it is not a question of the BIOS clock being in error. Obviously I have reset the clock several times to watch the degradation and in doing so have come up with the approximate 5 second loss per day. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=278621 ------- Comment #2 from mike_wells@cox.net 2007-06-05 16:00 MST ------- I could, however I also tested a 64 bit version of openSUSE 10.2 on another machine that I have. That machine is picking UP time (approx 2-3 seconds per day). hwinfo is not needed here. There is a serious problem with the Kernel/KDE. Please escalate this bug to CRITICAL. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=278621 ------- Comment #3 from jeffm@novell.com 2007-06-05 16:58 MST ------- hwinfo provides a lot of information about the system that is useful for debugging, including logs and hardware configuration. Since you're seeing a timing problem, it's reasonable to assume that there is an incorrect hardware interaction. I realize that you've reproduced the problem on multiple machines, but so far you're the only one to report this type of problem. The information you've provided so far is essentially the equivalent of "it's broken, please fix." It's entirely useless from a debugging perspective. This bug will be on hold until there's enough information to proceed. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

I "NEVER" asked my end users to do my troubleshooting for me. This just simply amazes me, PERIOD! I have 2 machines here running 10.2. One is 32 bit and the other 64 bit. Both machines DO NOT keep accurate time while running your OS. Now, to add fuel to the fire, this problem did NOT exist in 9.1 nor 9.3 nor 10.1. I am, to say the least, saddened that like everything else with SUSE, we (the end user) have to solve the problem. I have 2 SCSI CD burner drives hooked up to Adaptec cards in 2 different machines and have never been able to ever successfully burn or erase CD's since 9.1. This "bug" is STILL on the books. Come on guys. You are better than this. Hey, just to add my "fuel" to the fire. I can burn CD's with both machines all day, and all night long in WINDOZE (2K and XP). How pathetic! -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=278621 ------- Comment #8 from jonharson@gmail.com 2007-06-07 02:33 MST ------- What make you believe that supplying log file, the most basic thing a bug reported can do, constitute a act of "troubleshooting", if this represent too much work for you please stop filling report here. Right critical too, if you are really in engineering since the 40+ last year (and the fact that this is clearly a problem in the interaction kernel/rtc make me belive it isnt so, whith comment like "hwinfo is not needed here. There is a serious problem with the Kernel/KDE." to support it) something is telling me that you should have a clue about NTP and why its even needed. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=278621 ak@novell.com changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|ASSIGNED |NEEDINFO Info Provider| |mike_wells@cox.net ------- Comment #9 from ak@novell.com 2007-06-07 03:36 MST ------- The problem is unlikely to be in KDE, which just gets the time from the kernel, but either hardware or some low level interaction with your hardware/BIOS combination. Since we don't have access to your particular system we require you to run some tests because it is unlikely it can be reproduced elsewhere (and even if it could be it wouldn't be clear if it was the same problem) That is different from other non hardware near software you might have experience with. It could be just broken hardware. Some PC chipsets are very bad time keepers. You could try to boot with "noapic" and if that doesn't help afterwards with notsc and see if that avoids the drift. If yes please attach hwinfo output from the working boot. Also did you see the same problem with older releases? Also running NTP would be a likely workaround. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Please get a grip on the ENGLISH language, and grammar. YOU did not submit this bug. You have NOT contributed one thing to the issue other than being a "troll". As far as the "bug" goes with SUSE, mark it CLOSED. I was and have been fully aware of NTP since WAY before submitting the bug. NTP is nothing more than putting a "band-aid" on the problem, NOT resolving it. Finger pointing here is going in every direction. I am indeed sorry that I spent my time trying to point out a serious (if not critical) problem. And, I stated in comment #7 that this issue had NOT occurred in 9.1 NOR 9.3 NOR 10.1. It reared it's ugly head in 10.2. 32 and 64 bit versions. Does anybody read? CLOSE this bug, PERIOD! https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=278621 ------- Comment #12 from mike_wells@cox.net 2007-06-08 12:58 MST ------- O.K., you win! I will try your suggestions. This will take several days so that I can get an accurate reading on any drift. I never actually suspected KDE. Figured it was the kernel from the get go but since KDE "reports" I had to start somewhere. 9.X/10.1 were 32 bit only. And, to be quite frank, we can leave 9.1/10.1 out of this (although I never noticed any drift with these). I spent approx. 1 and 1/2 years with 9.3 so I know without a doubt that there was no drift there. Just built a new machine and that is the one that is running 64 bit and is picking up time with 10.2. I will be back as soon as I have some solid results. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=278621 ------- Comment #13 from mike_wells@cox.net 2007-06-14 17:28 MST ------- Right on Andreas. Rebooted on 6/9 with 'noapic' and there has been NO drift in either direction. 32 bit machine only. We can go after the 64 bit machine after this is resolved. 'hwinfo_noapic' is attached. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
