[Bug 803536] New: phonon/KDE thinks devices have been removed, ALSA still has them
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=803536 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=803536#c0 Summary: phonon/KDE thinks devices have been removed, ALSA still has them Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.3 Version: RC 1 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Sound AssignedTo: tiwai@suse.com ReportedBy: me@kalenz.eu QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: Community User Blocker: --- Upgrade approach: downloaded DVD ISO image and used this ISO file as a repository, removed all other repositories, then 'init 3' >> 'zypper dup'. Frequently, but not always, when booting into 12.3, KDE thinks the sound devices have gone missing. KMixer goes to "Dummy output", and when opening the Sound panel in KDE configuration, it says "These devices have gone missing, shall I forget about them permanently?" (and I obviously say 'no'). Curiously, alsamixer still has all devices. 'rcalsasound restart' does not help. The sound cards show in YaST as: 0: ATI Technologies Inc; driver snd-hda-intel 1: SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA); driver snd-hda-intel Hardware is Asus M4A89GTD mainboard with onboard Realtek ALC892 audio, 192KHz/24bit, and Radeon HD4290 onboard video with HDMI out. Device 0: is the ALC892 DAC; Device 1: is the HDMI output (not in use). It may be worth pointing out that the Radeon is running on the 'fbdev' fallback driver at the moment (X11 doesn't like the 'radeon' driver) which may explain the HDMI part acting funny, but I don't think this should affect the ALC892...? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Reassigned to KDE maintainers who should have more clue about it. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It first appeared for me after updating to 12.3RC1, so there's probably a patch out there that just hasn't made it into the 12.3 code (yet). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I found, that KDE/Phonon often reports missing audio devices after suspend/resume. Stopping Pulseaudio before suspend and restarting Pulseaudio after resume helped me a bit. It makes this bug occur less often. I tested under openSUSE 12.2. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The sound device in question is intel 802801G (ICH7 Hi definition Audio). The devices that it things have gone missing are everything except built-in-audio analog stereo. Since this is the only one that works reliably, I just told it to forget the others and It all works fine, and the message goes away. I find that all this does is tell it to hide the "advance devices" in my libphonon.conf. It all still works after telling it to forget these devices, as they never worked reliably under linux anyway. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

This will be effective with >= 4.10.95. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
