Every now and then they completely stop responding with the following entry alway being the last in the /var/log/messages Oct 16 11:27:35 funnel05 syslog-ng[4919]: STATS: dropped 0 Oct 16 12:27:35 funnel05 syslog-ng[4919]: STATS: dropped 0 I'm a newbie with linux so any help will be appreciated. However we aren't able to identify the problem. Could you switch your system to console, force it to freeze and post here what does it write, please? There should be more valuable information, than in the /var/log/messages.
