Likewise an option to control installation of packages required or recommended by a pattern. Also kiwi has the ability to ignore specified packages regardless of their presence in the requested pattern (so that they are not installed). Recently kiwi started to ask zypper to install patterns for it where kiwi used to interpret patterns itself and just ask zypper to install a long list of packages. This change caused kiwi to install a good deal more packages than it does when using other package managers. Kiwi wants zypper to support these features / options so that it doesn't have to interpret patterns itself but can still result in the same package list. Going further just goes against the whole reason of having patterns after all or? Please try disabling the recommends in zypp.conf. That should do most of it. No priority for fixing this.
