In fact, the problem in libv8 affects not only the stand-alone google maps application, but it also affects the ability to view http://www.google.com/maps from chrome/chromium browser. Updating to libv8-3 version 3.19 on my laptop seems to fix the problem. And that agrees with the info contained in the bug report at code.google. "osc bugowner openSUSE:12.1:Update v8" shows that the maintainer is Dirk Mueller.
