[Bug 328850] New: y2/baseinstall uses wrong server
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=328850 Summary: y2/baseinstall uses wrong server Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: RC 2 Platform: x86 OS/Version: Linux Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: jengelh@gmx.de QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: Beta-Customer I booted RC2, and selected NFS as installation source at the bootloader, entering 134.76.12.5 with /pub/opensuse/distribution/SL-OSS-factory/inst-source. Yast2 however uses http://download.opensuse.org/, that's not good. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

(I think this is even limited to the /update/10.3 subtree.) During the real install, it uses ftp5.gwdg.de as tcpdump shows. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

So it seems like my own FTP server is only used for the main repository, while it always grabs the /update tree and extra repositories from SUSE servers, even though it would also be available on ftp5.gwdg.de. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Only the base repository is pulled from the server I specified. This is expected behavior, since yast would not know where to look for suse-10.3-update and non-oss on ftp5.gwdg.de, so it uses download.opensuse.org. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

most close mirror
It does not do that. My outside IP address is from 134.76.0.0/16, yet, download.opensuse.org gives me ftp-stud.fht-esslingen.de[129.143.116.10] rather than the more close ftp.gwdg.de[134.76.12.3] / ftp4.gwdg.de[134.76.12.4] / ftp5.gwdg.de[134.76.12.5]. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=328850#c9 Peter Poeml <poeml@novell.com> changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|NEW |ASSIGNED --- Comment #9 from Peter Poeml <poeml@novell.com> 2007-11-12 06:56:47 MST --- "Most close" mirror is relative. Most close in Germany means: mirror from Germany. More precise IP geolocation of machines inside Germany is difficult / expensive to obtain. Still, I have been thinking about solutions in the past. See https://forgesvn1.novell.com/svn/opensuse/trunk/tools/download-redirector-v2... There is a documented idea to do something like that, and how to implement it. It would be a very nice feature for users in the vicinity of a mirror (like many large universities). Problem is, at the moment I have serious doubts about accuracy of network prefixes looked up. For performance reasons, something like the newly added facility in the GeoIP country database must suffice, however in previous tests it returned prefixes that were quite different than reality. It needs further evaluation if the available data is good enough to be usable. Another solution would be a client-side preference for certain mirrors. Whenever ftp5.gwdg.de is among the list of mirrors that have a certain file, your client could get it from there. Should be simple to implement. (And: we could even make this "mirror preference" work with mirrors which are not registered with us, I think.) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=328850 User poeml@novell.com added comment https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=328850#c10 --- Comment #10 from Peter Poeml <poeml@novell.com> 2008-07-17 11:26:14 MDT --- Okay, summarizing current state of what we know: For usage of local mirrors, libzypp needs support to configure this. There is no way around this requirement, because the server can never have an exact knowledge of such local requirements. A local mirror could be on your private subnet, after all. This is covered by http://en.opensuse.org/Libzypp/Failover I have a server-side idea for further network locality which helps inside Germany, but it could not guarantee that you get to exactly that mirror either. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
