We want this explicitness, so that it's immediately clear what compiler the person was using, when he submits a bug report.
But this is only for sources, right, and this is problem of the authors -- KDE, X11, Gnome, bash, etc. and only if you build packages by yourself. I am concerned, because the easiness of working compilers in Windows environment (I don't use it, but I know it) comparing to Linux -- the easiest choice to upgrade compiler is to upgrade whole system. This does not look like advantage. Btw. I am developer and I would like to use newer gcc (most importantly for __counter__ macro) but without too much work, like things should be, right? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

And when we get a bug report about gcc doing something wrong we want to immediately see if it happens in the system compiler or in something else.
This is true for all other programs, so why make a difference? I could use unsupported version of X11, KDE, Firefox, OOffice, you name it, and then the version number is also required to verify is this an "official" version or not. Besides, I could prepare gcc version 4.3 myself install it, remove 42 completely, and that would misguide you as well (*). I could also just install gcc43, remove everything else and create symlinks manually. Limiting gcc to version 4.2 is not solution to anything, it just making life of a user a bit harder (not mentioning obscure way to install things). And one more point -- you can buy Windows with technical support from Microsoft. And I really doubt that there is such strong relation between system and compiler in their case -- so how they did it? (*) I don't see any misguiding, though in both cases. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
