[Bug 239912] New: DVD read more than 4 GByte
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=239912 Summary: DVD read more than 4 GByte Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: All Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: reiner.proels@laposte.net QAContact: qa@suse.de Hello, I have the following problem: If I try to read more than 4 GByte from a DVD (it contains 4 files each 1.1 GByte). During reading the last file I get the following: Jan 28 11:39:45 linux kernel: attempt to access beyond end of device Jan 28 11:39:45 linux kernel: hda: rw=0, want=8388624, limit=8388604 Jan 28 11:39:45 linux kernel: Buffer I/O error on device hda, logical block 2097155 Jan 28 11:39:45 linux kernel: attempt to access beyond end of device Jan 28 11:39:45 linux kernel: hda: rw=0, want=8388628, limit=8388604 Jan 28 11:39:45 linux kernel: Buffer I/O error on device hda, logical block 2097156 Jan 28 11:39:45 linux kernel: attempt to access beyond end of device Jan 28 11:39:45 linux kernel: hda: rw=0, want=8388632, limit=8388604 Jan 28 11:39:45 linux kernel: Buffer I/O error on device hda, logical block 2097157 Jan 28 11:39:45 linux kernel: attempt to access beyond end of device Jan 28 11:39:45 linux kernel: hda: rw=0, want=8388636, limit=8388604 Jan 28 11:39:45 linux kernel: Buffer I/O error on device hda, logical block 2097158 Jan 28 11:39:45 linux kernel: attempt to access beyond end of device Jan 28 11:39:45 linux kernel: hda: rw=0, want=8388640, limit=8388604 Jan 28 11:39:45 linux kernel: Buffer I/O error on device hda, logical block 2097159 This has worked with Suse 10.1 (64 bit)! System: Suse 10.2 (Linux linux 2.6.18.2-34-default #1 SMP Mon Nov 27 11:46:27 UTC 2006 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux). I have tried it with the 32 bit version on an other machine and there was no problem in reading the DVD! Is think this is a bug Thanks -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=239912 ------- Comment #1 from reiner.proels@laposte.net 2007-01-29 16:22 MST ------- I have done some more testing and sometimes it works, if have also seen that hddtemp was running (and perhaps watching the drive?). So I'am not sure, the constant limit of 4 GByte was a little bit strange (as a developer I know that this is a critical limit for a lot of thinks ;-)). I will have a look at it! But I think that it was the hddtem daemon, if I start it fuser tells the following linux:~ # fuser -v /dev/hda USER PID ACCESS COMMAND /dev/hda: root 27828 f.... hddtemp now I have removed the hddtemp daemon from all runlevels (I only use hddtemp to adjust fans) and it seems to work (even with hddtemp daemon running ?!?). You need to configure hddtemp such that it only accesses fixed hdds. Regarding IDE cdrom driver, I'm not so sure whether changing the behavior is a good idea. IDE drivers are scheduled to be replaced by new libata drivers and people (including me) are generally hesitant to change its behavior unless it's an obvious bug fix. If you don't object, I'm gonna close this bug as INVALID. Ah.. another thing to note. If your odd isn't on the same controller as your harddisk, you might as well give a shot at libata driver. You can select it in yast hardware menu. It's usually named like [p]ata_something. This will change your cdrom from /dev/hda to /dev/sr0 but you can use it the same way and the sr driver will retry on media errors. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
