Btw: there is not file /etc/sysconfig/grub on Leap but /etc/default/grub and the variable is GRUB_TERMINAL. I doubt that this is a systemd bug even if not plymouth. Maybe grub does not initialize the virtual console with GRUB_TERMINAL=console. Nevertheless IMHO this is not a normal LCD but a virtual console of a virtual client which is unable to handle carrige return.
