It works fine (i.e., the cheese application shows the webcam image) out of the box. I have attached the corresponding system log entries from Fedora - they appear to be the same as on openSUSE 11.2 - and there is also no entry about creating the device node, so I guess that's normal behaviour. Still, attaching my webcam on openSUSE 11.2 and starting cheese (same procedure as on Fedora12) doesn't give me a picture, and there's no indication I know of to hint at what goes wrong. Applying the work-around of adding v4lcompat.so to /etc/ld.so.preload, as described above, is fine for my uses. It makes the camera work in the release version of openSUSE 11.3, and the image quality is as good as it gets.
