http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=546049 Summary: Logitech Quickcam Express driver fails to register device properly Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: Factory Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: devmail@hispeed.ch QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.1.3) Gecko/20090909 SUSE/3.5.3-2.1 Firefox/3.5.3 When I plug in my Quickcam Express the device remains unusable. The relevant system log entries are listed in the attachment. Note that everything seems to work fine right up to the point of creating the device node /dev/video0 - this last step never happens. It works fine (i.e., the cheese application shows the webcam image) out of the box. I have attached the corresponding system log entries from Fedora - they appear to be the same as on openSUSE 11.2 - and there is also no entry about creating the device node, so I guess that's normal behaviour. Still, attaching my webcam on openSUSE 11.2 and starting cheese (same procedure as on Fedora12) doesn't give me a picture, and there's no indication I know of to hint at what goes wrong. This hardware also used to work in openSUSE 11.0 out of the box. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I have the same problem, and using LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib64/libv4l/v4l1compat.so name_of_app works for me (since I'm on x86_64). -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Please install libv4l Users affected by this bug are encouraged to install libv4l and either run their applications like this: LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib64/libv4l/v4l1compat.so kopete LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype # 32-bit applications Slightly less recommended is to add the following to /etc/ld.so.preload: /usr/lib64/libv4l/v4l1compat.so If that is not working try 1-click install of the latest libv4l: http://software.opensuse.org/main/ymp_without_arch_and_version?package=libv4l&project=devel%3Alibraries%3Ac_c%2B%2B&repository=openSUSE_Factory -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=546049 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=546049#c6 --- Comment #6 from Olav Reinert <devmail@hispeed.ch> 2010-03-20 21:48:58 CET --- The workaround using LD_PRELOAD works, I have tested it with Kopete. However, the picture quality is quite bad, and there doesn't really seem to be any good way to adjust it, so it's practically unusable. Fortunately, the problem described by this bug no longer occurs in 11.3 M3 (same test with Kopete), so that's good enough for me. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

However, this bug can probably be closed. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Applying the work-around of adding v4lcompat.so to /etc/ld.so.preload, as described above, is fine for my uses. It makes the camera work in the release version of openSUSE 11.3, and the image quality is as good as it gets. I'm happy with it now. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
