Perhaps a simple fix would be to simply switch to another vtX in order to avoid the suspend log staying displayed while s2ram is active. See the attached picture for the log that stays displayed while s2ram is active (screen does not power-off). However, I think you're right when it comes to if the shutdown option is relevant for s2ram, which it isn't AFAIR. Please assimilate the patch for computers where the screen is not turned off successfully (you could also add a debug mode to still see the messages or reenable the shutdown method = shutdown setting if you prefer that).
