[Bug 691256] New: unable to open a connection to the XEN Hypervisor
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=691256 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=691256#c0 Summary: unable to open a connection to the XEN Hypervisor Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.4 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.4 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Xen AssignedTo: jdouglas@novell.com ReportedBy: melchiaros@aol.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:2.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/4.0.1 I´ve just started with a upgraded openSUSE11.4 to the tumbleweed standard repro(http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/openSUSE:/Tumbleweed/standard/), which runs as a guest in VirtualBox4.0.6. I´ve started the Xen-kernel 2.6.38 and the system comes up normal. When I try to start the Virtual Machine Manager I got the message: "Unable to open a connection to the XEN Hypervisor" I will add two screen-shots: One with the error message and a short stack trace(looks like). The other with the running daemons on the system. There is libvirt0.8.8 installed when I remember right. May be that this is the problem. There is as far as I know a newer version. It may also be my setup at all: Try to run XEN in VirtualBox might be a not so great full idea at all. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Install VirtualBox4.0.6 on your host 2.Install openSUSE11.4 as guest. 3.Switch the guest to repro:http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/openSUSE:/Tumbleweed/standard/ 4.Install xen with yast 5.make a newstart with the xen-kernel 6.start the virtual machine manager from kde launcher Actual Results: I can provite the virtual guest when it is needed, but my upload is not broad, so it could take some time! Expected Results: A running XEN would be fine. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

O.K the problem is that libvirtd is not started as daemon process. Should be done automatic when installing XEN.
That would violate openSUSE daemon security policy http://old-en.opensuse.org/Packaging/Security_Policies -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Yes xend is running, but well, twice
That may be the problem. So virt-manager could not connect?!
xend spawns a child to do all the work, so two xend processes is normal. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It must be something 11.4 specific.
I suspect a stock 11.4 will work too. You are using Xen 4.1 and kernel 2.6.38. openSUSE11.4 shipped with Xen 4.0.2 and kernel 2.6.37. BTW, the OBS Virtualization project contains newer xen packages (4.1.0_01-124.2), as shown in your attachment in #26. You should install the new packages and see if problem still exists. I'll find some time to try the 4.1.0_01-124.2 packages on a 11.4 system too. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Interestingly, just today we talked about removing the modprobe's of the backend modules from xend init script. I'm cc'ing Olaf and Jan as they were discussing a solution.
I had hoped the mainline kernel already has such an autoloading feature in place. What needs to be done for the various xen drivers is that dom0 and maybe also domU creates modalias files. They mean 'I found feature XYZ'. Then the drivers for that feature XYZ can say 'I can provide feature XYZ'. In the case of /sys/devices/platform/pcspkr/, there is a modalias "platform:pcspkr" created by the arch initcalls, which means there was some pcskr controler found during boot. Later udevtrigger walks through all the uevent files and retriggers the events because many were missed during very early boot. These events carry also the MODALIAS= property, which is passed to modprobe. modprobe eventually finds a driver that can handle pcskr because the driver has the alias: platform:pcspkr in it. modinfo driver shows the alias: lines. There are many for tg3, some for floppy, etc. In the case of xen, there is no such thing in place yet. In 11.4 kernel I see /sys/devices/xen and /sys/devices/xen-backend. But they are empty. This is the place where dom0 could place evtchn and gntdev for example. I have to check how exactly it needs to be done. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I have added the patch below to the 4.0.2 package in 11.4:
http://xenbits.xen.org/hg/xen-unstable.hg/diff/8bcaec29574e/tools/misc/xend
I just ran into a weird case of this bug: If the xen-tools package in a clean sles11sp1 installation is updated to some newer version that does a "insserv xencommons" in the %post install script, and later the xen-tools package is downgraded again to the sles11sp1 version, then the xencommons script will remain active because its packaged in the sles11sp1 xen-tools package. So for the sles11sp1 branch its best to not package the xencommons script at all and rely entirely on xend. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
