[Bug 227111] New: Text is so large that system is unusable
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=227111 Summary: Text is so large that system is unusable Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: KDE AssignedTo: kde-maintainers@suse.de ReportedBy: benjamin.j.mccann@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de The text on the system is enormous. The text under the icons such as my computer and the recycle bin take up most of the screen. The new kicker menu is unusable because it runs off the screen. The tip that comes up when KDE starts cannot be closed because it is so big it does not fit on the screen (The text is large enough that it would probably take up four screens). Let me know if there is any other info I can provide that would help (although I'm not sure what I'll be able to do with the system in its current state). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=227111 ------- Comment #11 from benjamin.j.mccann@gmail.com 2006-12-11 11:02 MST ------- I changed the xorg.conf file so that the DisplaySize was 578 by 324. It made no noticeable difference after reboot. Even if the display size were off by a factor of 2 I'm not sure that would be the problem because the text is at least 20 times too big. In Konsole, the KDE terminal, the menu takes up the top half of the screen because the text is so large. The text in the application itself is properly sized. The same goes with other applications I have tried such as Firefox. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

and reboot my machine? This is not necessary. Xserver restart is sufficient.
Is there anything you'd like to see after I do this (log files, etc.)? Sure. Does it help? Attach new logfile.

That did fix my problem. (I'm using the 64-bit version, so I moved /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/libddc.so) Sorry, didn't consider this. You're right.
Is there anything that having moved this library will negatively affect? Good question. I would like to see a logfile to check this. ==> NEEDINFO
Was this an actual bug? IMHO it's a monitor bug to return nonsense values.
If I do a fresh install sometime in the future of another system using the same tv/monitor is there anything I can do it works right off the bat? Unfortunately you can't. So you need to move libddc.so away and reconfigure
BTW, hwinfo/sax2 didn't specify Displaysize since it rejects nonsens values like these proped with the monitor. You could argue, that the same should also be done in the Xserver and it's indeed surprising that the monitor size values proped by DDC have a higher priority than the manually given values in xorg.conf. the Xserver again with sax2. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

The way SetDPI() works (at least here in my sources is as expected and don't explain the strange value we see. Hmm ... looks like pScrn->monitor->widthmm/pScrn->monitor->heightmm is set to <= 0 - for whatever reasons.
