[Bug 406480] New: USB printer not properly recognized (Samsung MFP SCX4200)
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=406480 User a_kemper@gmx.de added comment https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=406480#c1 Summary: USB printer not properly recognized (Samsung MFP SCX4200) Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Final Platform: x86 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.0 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Printing AssignedTo: jsmeix@novell.com ReportedBy: a_kemper@gmx.de QAContact: jsmeix@novell.com Found By: --- The installation of my multi-function printer with Samsung's Unified Linux Driver (http://org.downloadcenter.samsung.com/downloadfile/ContentsFile.aspx?CDSite=DE&CttFileID=828690&CDCttType=DR&ModelType=N&ModelName=SCX-4200&VPath=DR/200707/20070720152943906_UnifiedLinuxDriver.tar.gz) failed in the way, that no printer could be found by the driver software. Also manually selecting "/dev/mfp4", as it has been previously set-up in SuSE 10.1 didn't help, even though according to "/var/log/messages" the printer should be visible: usb 2-3: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 4 usb 2-3: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice usblp0: USB Bidirectional printer dev 4 if 1 alt 0 proto 2 vid 0x04E8 pid 0x341B usb 2-3: New USB device found, idVendor=04e8, idProduct=341b usb 2-3: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3 usb 2-3: Product: SCX-4200 Series usb 2-3: Manufacturer: Samsung usb 2-3: SerialNumber: 8T21BFAPA09373K. Unfortunately no further (error) messages can be found during set-up in "messages" and there is also no option to directly import the "scx4200.ppd" in the YaST printer dialog, since neither the "add driver" nor the "connection assistant" button show any effect. Any hints on how to proceed and/or find a workaround?? Closing with INVALID. Just for information: is not the kind of driver nor kind of printer we expect with "add driver". A PostScript Printer Description (PPD) file can be added there. Samsung is not providing OpenSource drivers, so we cannot help you here. We don't know how their driver works, nor what should be done there. Maybe you want to ask Samsung for support? It is known that Samsung also uses patented algorithm (JBIG), so even they write OpenSource drivers in future, we still might be unable to distribute them, as the patent fee has to be payed too - regardless if OpenSource or not. If you're searching for a printer from a company which provides full OpenSource drivers, and which we support, think about buying a HP printer. Even they are not the cheapest, they support Linux since many years - instead of Samsung, and work flawless. As said before: this is a support question, and not a bug. Closing with INVALID. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

You should use their tools to: install (guiinstall), print (slpr), configure the printer (Configurator). -- and no longer YaST, or the cups tools. Please read their documentation for further details. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
