[Bug 734778] New: Open SuSE 12.1 64bit DVD install fails to update boot loader
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=734778 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=734778#c0 Summary: Open SuSE 12.1 64bit DVD install fails to update boot loader Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Bootloader AssignedTo: jsrain@suse.com ReportedBy: stevet@copper.net QAContact: jsrain@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:8.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/8.0 I got the iso and did an md5 check. Good. Booted the DVD and told it to check itself. Good. Did the install to /dev/sdb3 as an update install (from 11.1 64 bit). Have tried it three times, changing an option here and there. The end result is, the GRUB on /dev/sda1 is not updated to include the updated partition. It did see that /home is on a raid (md0). Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Boot the DVD 2. Tell it to do an update boot 3. Allow the new boot process through the DVD (or manually do it w/ no DVD) and the GRUB loader menu does not contain the updated partition. Actual Results: The sdb3 partition does not have a file system that the SuSE 11.4 system knows about. Expected Results: I expected the 12.1 system to boot up, choke to death on the RAID "/home" (as it has on the last three SuSE releases) and have to fix a few things and then have it take off and work As I understand it, GRUB should have actually been replaced. The sdb1 partition did not have a loader in it (which it was setup for), and the sdb2 is a swap partition. sdb4 is the mirror copy of sda4 which is the /home partition. Using an AMD 2 core CPU with 8GB of RAM. The 11.4 system runs great out of sda3. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

This makes it difficult to copy the log to the running system. So standby while I download a LIVE system and try to read the 12.1 partition. If that fails, there is an even bigger problem with 12.1 64 bit DVD install than not fixing up the boot loader. Oh, have you tried to recreate this? I would imagine that you could use ANY SuSE 11.x to upgrade. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It seems you used EVMS for some reason in 11.1 and during the update process md0(old) = /boot turned into md0(new) = /home. I don't know why sdb3 is not mountable on 11.4. Maybe some EVMS meta data get in the way? Also, /run seems not to have been mounted during update, so no working udev. Thomas, could you have a look at the first two points? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=734778 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=734778#c5 --- Comment #5 from Steve Thompson <stevet@copper.net> 2011-12-06 13:37:46 UTC --- sda1 boot sda2 swap sda3 11.4 sda4 RAID0 (/home) sdb1 boot sdb2 swap sdb3 was 11.1 (test) should now be 12.1 sdb4 raid0 (/home) The 11.4 is still fully functional. Back when I was using 11.1, I had upgraded from 10.3 and was trying to have sdb be a full mirror of sda. I just couldn't get that to work. So I settled on the arrangement as you see above. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

During 12.1 LIVE or Install, the mouse and keyboard are NOT seen until they are moved to a normal USB hub. However, during normal operations (based off sda1 grub -- 11.4) they are, and the grub menu can be processed. Something doesn't seem quite right with 12.1. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

During the update YaST finds an fstab on /dev/sda3 and /dev/sdb3. The one on sdb3 is not valid since the root device therein is on /dev/md2. But mdadm does not find /dev/md2, only /dev/md0. Anyway, the user selects sdb3 to be updated. Mounting most volumes from fstab then fails (/dev/md[1-3]) since those devices do not exist. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I'd like to get this moving so I can verify that VMware will function with 12.1 so I can upgrade an 11.3 64 bit workstation that runs W/XP under VMware. I've noticed that you don't think much of this, as far as importance goes, but it is causing problems. And the /dev/md0 issue has been an issue since 11 (it used to work at 10.3). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Your fstab showed a device setup yast couldn't make anything of. And looking at the logs we can't either. As a result boot loader setup failed. Also, it's is not clear why sdb3 is not readable from 11.4. Was it readable before the update? As apparently the update worked and only the grub entry is missing you could just add it and be done. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
