[Bug 1037592] New: PackageKit cronjob runs daily even when disabled in `/etc/sysconfig/`
http://bugzilla.suse.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1037592 Bug ID: 1037592 Summary: PackageKit cronjob runs daily even when disabled in `/etc/sysconfig/` Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Tumbleweed Version: Current Hardware: Other OS: SUSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: GNOME Assignee: bnc-team-gnome@forge.provo.novell.com Reporter: christopher.a.kingparra@gmail.com QA Contact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: No Created attachment 723811 --> http://bugzilla.suse.com/attachment.cgi?id=723811&action=edit Content of /etc/cron.daily/packagekit-background.cron On openSUSE Tumbleweed, with "PackageKit-1.1.5-2.1.x86_64", the PackageKit cronjob in "/etc/cron.daily/packagekit-background.cron" will run daily regardless of whether it's turned off in "/etc/sysconfig/packagekit-background" through either the /etc/sysconfig editor YAST2 interface, or by editing "/etc/sysconfig/packagekit-background". I think this is because of a syntax error in the cronjob "/etc/cron.daily/packagekit-background.cron", which I've attached, but I'm not sure. Any log files to support that theory? I rather suspect that you have a GNOME desktop in front of you and GNOME Software is installed, which handles the lookup of updates out of the desktop session - not via the PK cron job. The command "gsettings get org.gnome.software download-updates" will show if this feature is enabled using "gsettings set org.gnome.software download-updates false" it can be disabled; but note that GNOME will not inform about any pending updates in this case. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

I rather suspect that you have a GNOME desktop in front of you and GNOME Software is installed, which handles the lookup of updates out of the desktop session - not via the PK cron job.
The command "gsettings get org.gnome.software download-updates" will show if this feature is enabled
using "gsettings set org.gnome.software download-updates false" it can be disabled; but note that GNOME will not inform about any pending updates in this case.

I assumed, wrongly, that there was a syntax error after reading the cronjob. Running `gsettings get org.gnome.software download-updates` did indeed show that it was set to `true`. (It must have been set after installing flatpak. ..another assumption.) After setting it to `false`, and rebooting a few times (to test), the notifications seem to have stopped. Sorry to have taken up your time with this. I meant well. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

If you find more issues, please feel free to report them as bugs. As a hint for the future: try to start with the observations what makes you feel / see something is wrong. Furhter informarion about what you already debug is certainly helpful (and greatly appreciated) - but having the observation documented to can help others better find the issue and compare with their own. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
