I see the window manager decoration in display :1 but nothing all (no background image/icons/... update: later I noticed that the desktop background and icons (plasma) etc. showed up on display :0 too :-( -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Same here. I guess DISPLAY is not set to :1 before you run startkde.
wrong guess fore sure, because - "xinit -- Xephyr :1" does set DISPLAY (it's the way it works -- try my example!;) - kwm works an displayed on :1 as reported -- hard to explain without DISPLAY - startkde would display the following error message $DISPLAY is not set or cannot connect to the X server. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It still doesn't change anything about the fact that we cannot reproduce. Can you find out what is so special about your setup?
looks like the problem is "kdeinit4" already running on display :0 ! I can reproduce the problem like this (starting on display :0 using xfce4) : starts kdeinit4: konquerer & now start new "server": xinit /usr/bin/xterm -- /usr/bin/Xephyr :1 in :1 startkde without kdeinit4 running on :0 the startkde in :1 works fine for me... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Is this working for you now?
"now" after what? I clearly stated how I can reproduce the problem and nothing happend in the mean time, so waiting for a reasonable answer to _that_ question without any other/new information or hint isn't really helpful (IMHO polling users and waiting for bugs (reports?) to vanish magically isn't the best method) (In reply to comment #8)
Closing this, there has been no response from the reporter and we are unable to reproduce it.
OK, reopening: YES, my report how to reproduce still is valid (all patches/updates being installed), this still "works" (breaks) for me (running xfce4 on :0!) did _you_ ever try the commands above ? (so you found my typo? ;-) so far you didn't even comunicate that you can't reproduce my report... more data: after starting/stopping konqueror the following processes are still running (tail output of "ps xOT") : 23621 ?
