[Bug 620836] New: xorg: highres mode rejected
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=620836 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=620836#c0 Summary: xorg: highres mode rejected Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.3 Version: RC 2 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: X.Org AssignedTo: bnc-team-xorg-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: jengelh@medozas.de QAContact: xorg-maintainer-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com Found By: Beta-Customer Blocker: --- I have here a openSUSE 11.2 with Xorg 7.5_1.8.0 (from OBS) with 2.6.33.5. Graphics chip is a 01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RS690M [Radeon X1200 Series] 01:05.0 0300: 1002:791f The connected monitor is an ACER 24" capable of 1920x1080, over DVI. Nothing is connected on VGA. By default, Xorg starts up with the VESA driver in 1600x1200 only however. radeon.ko is not autoloaded because modinfo tells me it has no PCI IDs. Forcing radeon.ko to be loaded (using `modprobe radeon modeset=1`) only switches the display to 1600x1200 too - and Xorg would then likely use fbdev. So I added to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/99-local.conf Section "Device" Identifier "radeon" Driver "radeon" EndSection Section "Screen" Identifier "radeon" Device "radeon" EndSection Section "ServerLayout" Screen "radeon" EndSection whereafter Xorg does finally start using the radeon driver. It does however pick a very coarse mode (1024x768). This log is attached. Running `sax2 -m 0=radeon` gives me the desired 1920x1080 output, but I had hoped Xorg's autodetection could have figured better. xrandr: $ xrandr Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1024 x 768, maximum 3840 x 1920 VGA-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) LVDS connected 1024x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x 0mm 1024x768 60.0*+ 60.0 800x600 60.3 59.9 640x480 59.9 59.4 DVI-0 connected 1024x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 582mm x 375mm 1920x1200 60.0 + 1600x1200 60.0 1680x1050 59.9 1280x1024 75.0 60.0 1440x900 59.9 1280x800 59.9 1152x864 75.0 1024x768 75.0 72.0 70.1 60.0* 832x624 74.6 800x600 72.2 75.0 60.3 56.2 640x480 75.0 72.8 66.7 59.9 720x400 70.1 -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

No, that's again with KMS enabled. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Wasn't radeonhd obsoleted in favor of radeon?
Priority: 1. radeon/KMS 2. radeonhd (if package installed) 3. radeon (without KMS, also called UMS)
I installed xorg-x11-driver-video-7.5-63.1, xorg-x11-server-7.5_1.8.0-54.1, xorg-x11-libxcb-7.5-10.1, libdrm-2.4.21, libpciaccess0-7.5-14.6 from X11:XOrg now, which gives me the desired resolution using the VESA driver. For me, that solves the issue :-)
Additionally, the installation of radeonhd still causes the X server to choose VESA.
Can't be RS690 *is* supported by radeonhd driver. I need the logfile again. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

You can't see that in the logfile, but it seems you've copied /etc/X11/xorg.conf.install (X.Org configuration from installation) to /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Please make sure you don't have any xorg.conf around. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
