Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: unspecified Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Other AssignedTo: jw@novell.com ReportedBy: jw@novell.com QAContact: qa@suse.de CC: houghi@houghi.org rembrand creates .bmp files 1 bit deep. openoffice rejects this, it needs 24bpp for its openintro_suse.bmp -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=225146 ------- Comment #9 from houghi@houghi.org 2006-12-01 15:27 MST ------- The gecko head should be removed. I see no problem with the link to the Novell site, although I would lie to see http://openSUSE.org as default, but that is a general thing. Going to a website is not a trademark issue. As Novell has put their time into it, I don't see why they won't be allowed some advertising as well. Registration with Novell is also not realy a trademark issue, I think. Wether Novell wants this or not is something else. It is also just a website visit. Perhaps something can be done to count how many people actualy use a rebranded version. Could be interesting if a large customer decides to use it. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=225146 jw@novell.com changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|NEW |ASSIGNED ------- Comment #10 from jw@novell.com 2006-12-04 10:54 MST ------- Gecko head added to the list. Version 1.1c submitted to build service. Regarding the other items -- firefox and greeter, houghi is right: there is no legal requirement to change these; but please keep collecting inappropriate or annoying constrictions so that we have a list to work on later. Most of such items (and also those that rembrand handles now) could also be handled at compile-time. And probably more elegantly then. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=225146 ------- Comment #11 from houghi@houghi.org 2006-12-04 18:44 MST ------- A nice feature to have would be support for subdirectories both for reading and writing. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=225146 ------- Comment #12 from jw@novell.com 2006-12-05 08:32 MST ------- Indeed. -> 1.1d The built-in magic works like this: Specify a directory, and if there is exactly one more level of subdirectory needed before we reach some RPMs, then this subdirectory is created inside the rpmout_dir to hold these RPMs. White on transparent is not nice. I thought some images where plain white, but they contained a logo. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=225146 ------- Comment #14 from dbolt.abiryy@davjam.org 2007-01-06 16:50 MST ------- Just a small question about one of the images rpm-rembrand removes. In the package sax2-gui, rpm-rembrand strips out the files /usr/share/xfine/figures/minisuse.gif and /usr/share/xfine/figures/suse.gif. While I can understand removing minisuse.gif, since it includes an image of geeko, I'm wondering why suse.gif is stripped. The image, suse.gif, appears to be just a plain coloured bar, with a colour transition at the bottom and the text "Sax2...". Is Sax2 a trademark, which would require the images removal, or could it be left unstripped? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=225146 ------- Comment #15 from jw@novell.com 2007-01-08 06:50 MST ------- The name 'suse.gif' is a strong indicator, that this file may contain something suse specific. The current contents is not. There is no legal need to strip this image. But keeping an eye on it, is still a good thing. Therefore this image is flagged optional. Run rpm-rembrand -a and it gets stripped, run without '-a' and it remains as is. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=225146 ------- Comment #16 from dbolt.abiryy@davjam.org 2007-01-09 19:45 MST ------- Explains why it appeared in the list of images to replace. I've been using -a by default. Found a few more images that need to be stripped: /usr/share/sax/api/figures/sax.png sax2-gui-8.1-83.mod /usr/share/sax/api/figures/x11.png sax2-gui-8.1-83.mod /usr/share/pixmaps/sax2.png sax2-8.1-83 /usr/share/pixmaps/software.png desktop-data-SuSE-10.2-20.mod /usr/share/pixmaps/SuSEconf.png desktop-data-SuSE-10.2-20.mod /usr/share/pixmaps/package-manager-icon.png libzypp-2.9.1-5 These were from packages on the 10.2 GM CDs. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=225146 ------- Comment #18 from dbolt.abiryy@davjam.org 2007-01-11 16:49 MST ------- As a FYI, I created a list of all the images installed on my 10.2 system, stripped out those that were already matched by rembrand and then looked through the remaining 29,000 images. Below is a list of those that I found that weren't included. I've already put them in the required format suitable for inclusion straight into rpm-rembrand. I didn't mark any of them as optional as I wasn't sure which ones could be classed as optional, which ones would be allowed to remain, and those that must be removed. :gnome-icon-theme:/opt/gnome/share/icons/gnome/16x16/apps/im-nov.png :gnome-themes:/opt/gnome/share/pixmaps/novell-button.png :gnome-themes:/opt/gnome/share/pixmaps/novell-button.png :gnome-themes:/opt/gnome/share/pixmaps/ximian/novell-button.png :kdepim3:/opt/kde3/share/apps/kaddressbook/icons/crystalsvg/16x16/apps/groupwise_protocol.png :opensuse-manual_en:/usr/share/doc/manual/opensuse-manual_en/manual/images/firefox.png :opensuse-manual_en:/usr/share/doc/manual/opensuse-manual_en/manual/images/firefox_main.png :opensuse-manual_en:/usr/share/doc/manual/opensuse-manual_en/manual/images/firefox-main.png :opensuse-manual_en:/usr/share/doc/manual/opensuse-manual_en/manual/images/firefox-bookmarkmanager.png :opensuse-manual_en:/usr/share/doc/manual/opensuse-manual_en/manual/images/help-s-start.png :opensuse-manual_en:/usr/share/doc/manual/opensuse-manual_en/manual/images/i_y2_desktop.png :opensuse-manual_en:/usr/share/doc/manual/opensuse-manual_en/manual/images/kde_addicon_desk.png :opensuse-manual_en:/usr/share/doc/manual/opensuse-manual_en/manual/images/kde_addicon_panel.png :opensuse-manual_en:/usr/share/doc/manual/opensuse-manual_en/manual/images/kde_cc_editmm.png :opensuse-manual_en:/usr/share/doc/manual/opensuse-manual_en/manual/images/kde_desktop.png :opensuse-manual_en:/usr/share/doc/manual/opensuse-manual_en/manual/images/kde_desktop_effects.png :opensuse-manual_en:/usr/share/doc/manual/opensuse-manual_en/manual/images/kde_desktop_sled.png :opensuse-manual_en:/usr/share/doc/manual/opensuse-manual_en/manual/images/kde_explorer.png :opensuse-manual_en:/usr/share/doc/manual/opensuse-manual_en/manual/images/kde_helpcenter.png :opensuse-manual_en:/usr/share/doc/manual/opensuse-manual_en/manual/images/kde_kcontrol_panel.png :opensuse-manual_en:/usr/share/doc/manual/opensuse-manual_en/manual/images/kde_mainmenu.png :opensuse-manual_en:/usr/share/doc/manual/opensuse-manual_en/manual/images/kde_menu.png :opensuse-manual_en:/usr/share/doc/manual/opensuse-manual_en/manual/images/kde_mycomputer.png :opensuse-manual_en:/usr/share/doc/manual/opensuse-manual_en/manual/images/kdm_screenshot.png :opensuse-manual_en:/usr/share/doc/manual/opensuse-manual_en/manual/images/kde_sl_panel.png :opensuse-manual_en:/usr/share/doc/manual/opensuse-manual_en/manual/images/kde_taskbar_a.png :opensuse-manual_en:/usr/share/doc/manual/opensuse-manual_en/manual/images/kde_term.png :opensuse-manual_en:/usr/share/doc/manual/opensuse-manual_en/manual/images/opensuseupdater_updates.png :yast2-inetd:/usr/share/doc/packages/yast2-inetd/autoyast-conftree-000.png :yast2-inetd:/usr/share/doc/packages/yast2-inetd/inetd-6-servicedetails-000.png :yast2-inetd:/usr/share/doc/packages/yast2-inetd/inetd-6-servicedetails-001.png :yast2-inetd:/usr/share/doc/packages/yast2-inetd/inetd-5-maindialog-000.png :yast2-inetd:/usr/share/doc/packages/yast2-inetd/inetd-5-maindialog-001.png :yast2-inetd:/usr/share/doc/packages/yast2-inetd/workflow.png :yast2-inetd:/usr/share/doc/packages/yast2-inetd/workflow-autoyast.png :yast2-nis-client:/usr/share/doc/packages/yast2-nis-client/nis-client-1-start-000.png :yast2-nis-client:/usr/share/doc/packages/yast2-nis-client/nis-client-2a-single-000.png :yast2-nis-client:/usr/share/doc/packages/yast2-nis-client/nis-client-2b-multiple-000.png :yast2-nis-client:/usr/share/doc/packages/yast2-nis-client/nis-client-2c-expert-000.png :yast2-nis-client:/usr/share/doc/packages/yast2-nis-client/workflow.png :yast2-tv:/usr/share/doc/packages/yast2-tv/tv.png :yast2-devel:/usr/share/doc/packages/yast2/wizard/progress1.png :yast2-devel:/usr/share/doc/packages/yast2/wizard/progress2.png :yast2-devel:/usr/share/doc/packages/yast2/wizard/wizard1.png As to /usr/share/pixmaps/package-manager-icon.png, that one slipped through the filtering on eyes-1.0 and wetware-1.0. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=225146 ------- Comment #20 from dbolt.abiryy@davjam.org 2007-01-22 15:41 MST ------- Well, those wet-eyes-1.0 are now seriously-tired-eyes-1.0. After unpacking every file from all 7986 packages on the boxed DVD, deleting any files that "file" doesn't identify as an image, then checking to see which ones appear to have a Novell/SUSE mark, I think this is probably about all the images left to add. I'll say probably because there's always the chance I missed a few. As you consider screenshots to be optional, I've marked those as optional as well. :arcad_eval-102:/opt/tuxbase/projects/arcad/img/masquerading.jpg https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=225146 ------- Comment #24 from dbolt.abiryy@davjam.org 2007-01-22 17:49 MST ------- Created an attachment (id=114298) --> (https://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=114298&action=view) script to extract all files from packages and identify the images This is the script I used to locate and identify possibly infringing images. The only file it really relies upon is one created by using: rpm-rembrand -d | \ awk -F: '{print $3}' | \ sed -e "s/\./\\\./g" -e "s/\*/\.\*/g" >known.images.txt This is to convert the known images into a series of regex expressions. It uses rpm2cpio and cpio to extract the contents of each rpm. After that, file is used to identify all the images (grep " image data,"), with all the non-images deleted. The image filenames are compared against a list of previously checked images, and any that haven't been checked are deleted. The results are then resized using montage, with a text file containing the image filename, and I then used Konquerors icon view to quickly scan the images. If there are any that look as though they may infringe, I rename the corresponding text file and xview displays the image again. I then get to choose as to whether it's removal is optional, non-optional, or not required. Any optional or non-optional files are added to an "images.to.report.txt" file, the results of which have already been included in comment #20. By maintaining a list of already checked rpm files, as well as checked images, I was able to break the scanning as resume at will. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Presently, the script won't find any .xpm files, as file identifies them a "X pixmap data" It will also miss .ppm files as file returns " image data" whereas the grep used for locating images looks for " image data," That extra "," means the they aren't found. This patch corrects that as well as adding a check for "pixmap data". I've patched my local copy of the script, and am running again. So far, I have found another 19 files. Once the run is complete, I'll submit the newly found images. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=225146 ------- Comment #30 from dbolt.abiryy@davjam.org 2007-01-25 18:35 MST ------- I'm not sure how this one could be handled, but there's an openSUSE logo compiled into /usr/bin/BackGround (xdmbgrd). One possible solution would be to actually remove the package, as there are no other packages that require it. Another would be to replace it with a dummy file that simply exits with a return value of 0 when it's called. And this one was fun to find. I only found it because I did a minimal graphic install during my experimenting. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=225146 ------- Comment #31 from jw@novell.com 2007-01-26 04:54 MST ------- Yes, compiled images are evil. The only way to get at them is to rebuild the binaries from sources, unfortunatly. (with xpm files one could think about patching the binary, as the images are uncompressed and always same size, but with jpg or png, a replacement of exact same size is difficult to create) Removal of the binary may work for simple things like /usr/bin/BackGround but will not work for e.g. yast components.
