[Bug 379503] New: Adobe Reader (acroreader) misses localization files
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=379503 Summary: Adobe Reader (acroreader) misses localization files Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Factory Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: Commercial AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: burnus@gmx.de QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Adobe Reader (acroread) is available (in the Linux version) for several languages: Chinese (simplified, traditional), Danish, Dutch, English (US and UK version), Finnish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish. http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2_allversions.html Currently, openSUSE only offers the English (US) locale. Expected: openSUSE should offer a a acroread-{locale,translations,...} package or acroread-<lang> packages, which contains the language specific files. Reasoning: Not all people have English as their mother tongue. Looking for instance at the German version, one sees that it contains the English locale but also: a) in COMMON.TAR: Adobe/Reader8/Reader/help/DEU/ReadMe.htm Adobe/Reader8/Reader/Messages/DEU/RdrMsgDEU.pdf Adobe/Reader8/Reader/HowTo/DEU/{images,*.html,*.css,*.xml,*.js} Adobe/Reader8/Reader/Legal/de_DE/License.txt Adobe/Help/de_DE/Adobe Reader/8.0/* b) ILINXR.TAR Adobe/Reader8/Reader/intellinux/plug_ins/Annotations/Stamps/DEU/ Adobe/Reader8/Reader/intellinux/sidecars/*DEU Adobe/Reader8/Reader/BeyondReader/DEU/ Adobe/Reader8/Reader/IDTemplates/DEU/ Adobe/Reader8/Browser/HowTo/DEU/Browser_Plugin_HowTo.txt Regardins (a): I have the impression that DEU and de_DE contain (at least partially) the same files. Additionally the images should be the same as in the English version. With symbolic links the size could be reduced significantly. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The binary of acroread 8.1.2 is always exactly the same for all languages (somebody from Adobe confirmed this). And I already packaged the CJK fonts and cmaps: acroread-fonts-zh_TW-8.1.2-14 acroread-fonts-zh_CN-8.1.2-14 acroread-fonts-ja-8.1.2-14 acroread-fonts-ko-8.1.2-14 acroread-8.1.2-20 acroread-cmaps-8.1.2-14 Doing more than this is not as easy as it seems to be at first glance. For example, even the start script /usr/bin/acroread contains translations but always only for a single language. I.e. even the startscripts /usr/bin/acroread from the different language versions already conflict and need to be merged. It would make it much easier for us if Adobe were a bit more responsive and helpful in fixing things like that. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

As I wrote in comment #1, I already packaged the extra fonts and CMaps for CJK into addon packages. But even if one installs the SuSE packages acroread, acroead-cmaps, and acroread-fonts-ja, one still doesn’t have Japanese translations, for example the menus and the help files are still English. I think it would be much nicer to be able to package the Japanese translations in an additional package like “acroread-ja” which would be a *small* optional addon. Having yet another 40MB package acroead_xx.rpm for each language xx when all of these packages contain the same binaries and differ only in tiny translations is very wasteful and impossible for us We could never add many such packages to the distribution. And of course such complete packages acroread_xx.rpm and acroread_yy.rpm would conflict, i.e. one could have only one language version installed at the same time. That is not nice, it would be much better if user A who uses ja_JP.UTF-8 locale could see the user interface of acroread in Japanese and user B on the same system who uses de_DE.UTF-8 locale could see the user interface of acroread in German. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=379503 User mfabian@novell.com added comment https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=379503#c3 --- Comment #3 from Mike Fabian <mfabian@novell.com> 2008-04-30 04:21:40 MST --- I could already try to do that for the SuSE packages, but currently this would be very hard: I would have to download all the different language packages from ftp.adobe.com and if I kept them all in the source rpm I would have a really huge source rpm (extremely wasteful if most of the files contained in the tar balls are duplicates). Then would have to find out myself which files are added different languages and package them into small language specific addons. Having to find this out myself is quite error prone, it would be far easier if Adobe offered already *small* tarballs with language specifed addons. And in some cases there are even files which conflict between the different language tarballs, for example the start scripts apparently already contain translations but only for the language of the acroread tar ball for that language, thus conflicting with the start scripts used for other languages. I think these different start scripts should be merged into a generic start script to be used for *all* languages. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

As I explained above, it doesn’t make much sense to package a huge, full acroread package seperately for each language. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

After reviewing this BUG I can see that there has been no activity for the past 8 months , since April 2008. Could you please provide a target build , it is not acceptable to install the component in English on a French installation as an example; If it can not be fixed then the component should not be installed at all. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Adobe knows about this problem, an Adobe employee is even in the CC: of this but and I hope that the problem will be addressed in a future upstream release of acroread. In the meantime, do you really want no acroread at all on a French installation rather than an English one?? Then I will get bug reports complaining that acroread is not installed and all the free pdf readers cannot display a certain document which can only be displayed correctly by acroread. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

You do not need to wait for Adobe to change something and impact all the future SLED 11 user base. If it is a limitation from adobe then you should go around the limitation and add the separate packages to the media for at least the 3 primary languages in the world and that would be English, French and Spanish, at a minimum.
