[Bug 242316] New: sata_nv (10.2) does not work on MSI K9N Ultra 2F (nForce 570) and prevents installation on SATA-disk; OpenSuse 10.1 does not have this problem
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=242316 Summary: sata_nv (10.2) does not work on MSI K9N Ultra 2F (nForce 570) and prevents installation on SATA-disk; OpenSuse 10.1 does not have this problem Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: hermanns@dirk-hermanns.com QAContact: qa@suse.de When booting OpenSuse 10.2 (x86_64 DVD, i386 DVD, and i386 live DVD) no SATA hard disks are detected. I have a MSI K9N Ultra 2-F (MS-7500, nVidia nForce 570; BIOS 3.30 from Dec, 2006), my CPU is an Athlon64 X2 4200+. Here are the correspondig lines from dmesg (i386 live DVD) --- cut --- scsi0 : sata_nv ata1: SATA link up 1.5 Gbps (SStatus 113 SControl 300) ata1.00: qc timeout (cmd 0xec) ata1.00: failed to IDENTIFY (I/O error, err_mask=0x4) ata1: SRST failed (status 0xFF) ata1: SRST failed (err_mask=0x100) ata1: follow-up softreset failed, retrying in 5 secs --- cut --- After that I sucessfully installed OpenSuse 10.1 (SUSE-Linux-10.1-Remastered-DVD-x86_64.iso) on my PC. Nevertheless I want to switch to OpenSuse 10.2 x86_64. Since Fedora Core 6 (2.6.18) behaves like OpenSuse 10.2 and Ubuntu 6.10 (2.6.17) behaves like OpenSuse 10.1, I think that the problems are related to the major changes of sata_nv/libata (switch from version 0.8 to 2 and from scsi directory to ata). Maybe the old version tolerated more BIOS- and acpi table flaws. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

IRQ routing has changed and it seems that sata_nv is not getting IRQs from the controller thus leading to the failure. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Won't happen again. Although it looks like there have been a lot of changes, as far as sata_nv and detection are concerned, I can't find any relevant change in libata. To me it still looks like an IRQ routing problem. Can you please try the followings? 1. boot live dvd with only 'irqpoll' boot parameter (just type irqpoll at the Boot Options text entry in the boot loader) and report the result of 'dmesg' and 'cat /proc/interrupts'. 2. do the same as #1 but with 'acpi=noirq' option. 3. do the same as #1 but with 'noapic' option. (not typo, #2 is acpi while this one is apic). https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=242316 ------- Comment #8 from dirk@dirk-hermanns.com 2007-03-22 17:18 MST ------- I am alive:-). Sorry, since I had to work in some projects and to see the Novell folks and others at CeBIT, I could not respond in time. In order to make the system running, I bought a PCIe SATA controller: 04:00.0 RAID bus controller: JMicron Technologies, Inc. JMicron 20360/20363 AHCI Controller (rev 02) 04:00.1 IDE interface: JMicron Technologies, Inc. JMicron 20360/20363 AHCI Controller (rev 02) Furthermore I bought PCI firewire controller: 01:02.0 FireWire (IEEE 1394): VIA Technologies, Inc. IEEE 1394 Host Controller (rev 46) When I connect the SATA drives to the on board (Nvidia) SATA connectors, the system works properly without any modifications of the boot parameters. I will have time for further testing in early April. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
