[Bug 447198] New: no item in /media shown after inserting "ZeroCD" datacard into express slot
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=447198 Summary: no item in /media shown after inserting "ZeroCD" datacard into express slot Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Beta 5 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Other AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: martin.konopka@stuba.sk QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Community User In previous versions of openSUSE (I tested 11.0, 11.1 beta3,beta4) when I inserted my datacard Option GlobeTrotter Express 7.2 into the express slot, my notebook opened a window with a question what to do (with possibilities like Open, Do nothing, Cancel, Configure). I always have been using KDE; KDE4 in beta4. After clicking on Open or Cancel the item ZeroCD appeared in the /media directory, i.e. /media/ZeroCD (The datacard contains also some files there similarly like a usb stick.) In openSUSE 11.1. beta5 I have again KDE4 and the system does not ask anything and does not display anything in /media directory when I insert the datacard. Still, the datacard is somehow detected by the system because I can use it for mobile GPRS/UMTS communication. For this I need just to start umtsmon and have also usb_modeswitch installed and NetworkManager deactivated. I wonder that this bug may be related to the bug 444913 and also to (most likely the same) bug 446563 . -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

(openSUSE 11.0 and previous beta versions of 11.1 did mount it - hence I was surprised by beta5.) But to more important thing: after inserting the card into the express slot it is NOT switched to the modem mode automatically. I can see it when I launch umtsmon. This program then makes call to usb_modeswitch which switches the card. So, just after inserting the card, this device is in (for me) some strange state which is neither a mounted device nor a modem device. This is what surprises me. Please see my lshal outputs: before inserting the card, after inserting etc. In addition I attach also umtsmon output. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

After log in and execting ls /media I can not see any item there. Anyway the card seems not to be in modem mode yet because if I launch umtsmon it writes a message that the card needs to be switched. Hence in this new situation (with card plugged in before the computer boots) the card is (for me) in some unknown state which is neither a mounted storage device nor a modem device. (Perhaps it is a not-mounted yet storage device?) Of course I am using the updated hal 0.5.12-28.2.i586 . I do not report this as an issue or bug. I am just writing it for the case that you might be interested in it. I also attach three files. LiveCD GNOME: when booted with the card, no item is shown in /media when the card is inserted after boot, device is shown in /media LiveCD KDE4: when booted with card, behaviour is random: in my first attempt the device was shown in Device Notifier (but no item in /media directory) In my second attempt (reboot with the card) there was not any item neither in Device Notifier nor (of course) in /media dir. When I unplug the card and plug it in I can see the item ZeroCd in Device Notifier (but not in /media). Clicking to Device Notifier I can mount the device as /media/ZeroCD . In summary, situation looks to be unsatisfactory. Please look on Comment 10 of this report. It reports on situation with a version 0.5.12-28.2 of hal and in that case it worked for me. I add also some lshal outputs. If you want outputs also under some different conditions let me know. Finally, I am pretty disappointed by the fact that umtsmon program is missing on the live media.
