[Bug 254971] New: Texmode installation is too large and installs X11
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=254971 Summary: Texmode installation is too large and installs X11 Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: All OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Minor Priority: P5 - None Component: Patterns AssignedTo: aj@novell.com ReportedBy: delgado@dfn-cert.de QAContact: aj@novell.com Hi! The textmode installation is unsuitable for a headless system, lots of unneeded graphics software is installed. Specifically I was able to uninstall the following packages after the installation as the system (a soekris 4800) has no graphics card, no mouse, no keyboard, no printer, only network and serial ports: xorg-x11-libXdmcp-7.2-8 libgimpprint-4.2.7-101 xorg-x11-libXt-7.2-13 xorg-x11-libXmu-7.2-13 xorg-x11-libXprintUtil-7.2-8 mkisofs-cdrkit.1.0pre5-6 glitz-0.5.6-21 mono-data-1.1.18.1-12 a2ps-4.13-1102 pango-1.14.5-16 foomatic-filters-3.0.2-48 qlogic-firmware-1.0-34 manufacturer-PPDs-10.2-20 xorg-x11-libXau-7.2-8 xorg-x11-libSM-7.2-12 fontconfig-2.4.1-19 xorg-x11-libXfixes-7.2-13 xorg-x11-libXrender-7.2-12 xorg-x11-libXp-7.2-8 xorg-x11-libXpm-7.2-12 xorg-x11-libs-7.2-19 qt3-3.3.7-12 cups-libs-1.2.7-3 wireless-tools-29pre10-22 mono-core-1.1.18.1-12 qscintilla-1.65-40 ghostscript-fonts-std-8.15.3-24 mono-web-1.1.18.1-12 dbus-1-mono-0.63-28 ghostscript-library-8.15.3-24 rug-7.1.100.0-34 yast2-sound-2.14.0-10 yast2-tv-2.14.0-12 xorg-x11-libICE-7.2-13 xorg-x11-libfontenc-7.2-12 libtiff-3.8.2-25 xorg-x11-libX11-7.2-13 xorg-x11-libXext-7.2-12 xorg-x11-libxkbfile-7.2-12 xorg-x11-libXv-7.2-8 Mesa-6.5.1-23 cups-drivers-1.2.7-7 gtk2 python-qt cairo liblcms atk zisofs-tools hplip libmng hplip-hpijs smpppd Since there is no harddisk either (just a CF card) I could probably remove things like hddtemp, smartmon and many others. Probably the packages and their dependencies could be further split up into a backend and a graphical part. Also some yast-configuration packages should not depend on X11 or hardware libraries, rather they should check at runtime, if needed libraries are installed. Why a minimal textmode install chooses software such as "glitz" is especially puzzling. This problem has been there for several SuSE versions now, but it's getting worse from one version to the next. Of course there are alternatives to a manual install, such as thinning out this system and cloning it for autoyast, so this problem is not really that urgent, but I'd like to see it tackled in one of the next versions.
