[Bug 217362] New: xscreensaver shows up in KDE
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=217362 Summary: xscreensaver shows up in KDE Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Beta 1 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Usability AssignedTo: siegfried.olschner@novell.com ReportedBy: danielstefanmader@web.de QAContact: siegfried.olschner@novell.com The basic xscreensaver shows up in a KDE session after a while. It also asks for the user's password to stop. There is no option in the KDE Control Center to configure xscreensaver but only kscreensaver. The latter is configured to stop without password, too. In a KDE environment, kscreensaver should be used (as in previous releases :) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

This is not a 'screen saver', but a TFT killer! The behaviour is caused by the xset dpms settings (xset q --> Standby 600, Suspend 1200, Off 1800). Tested with openSUSE 10.2 beta 2. Same problem is in SUSE 10.1. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=217362 ------- Comment #4 from dmueller@novell.com 2006-11-17 02:14 MST ------- I rarely have this problem as well, but I can not relieably trigger it as well. My current observation is that it seems to be caused by (k)powersave. It happens if you a) either switch the kpowersave scheme or it is switched automatically by the daemon (e.g AC power is plugged/unplugged or similar). Can you confirm that? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=217362 ------- Comment #5 from michael@kofler.cc 2006-11-17 02:30 MST ------- Both powersaved and kpowersave are running. However, this is a rather old PC (AMD Athlon at 1.4 GHz) which only runs on AC power. BIOS supports ACPI. If needed, I can provide dmesg, lspci, siga etc. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=217362 ------- Comment #6 from dmueller@novell.com 2006-11-17 02:52 MST ------- hmm, first question would be why you run (k) powersave then at all.. do you see a pattern when this occurs? does it happen without kpowersave / powersave running? the underlying issue is that both X and kdesktop (a KDE process) keep time-tracking of user activity and if you see the "X" screensaver, it means that the X server (but not KDE) thought that it would be time to run it. normally, the kde screensaver should always win given that it starts one minute earlier than the x one. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

why you run (k) powersave then at all
standard installation with KDE, I didn't change any power-related settings
if you see the "X" screensaver
just to clarify: I don't see any X screensaver, the screen just goes black and the monitor turns off after some minutes; (I set the timeout for the KDE screensaver to 60 minutes) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

That currently xscreensaver is being used instead of kscreensaver is simply a bug.
This will all be OK again once kpowersave is fixed.
This is wrong, because KPowersave does not change the selected screensaver. KPowersave does not start XScreensaver in a KDE session. KPowersave only use XScreensaver if there is no KScreensaver running (e.g. in a GNOME session) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=217362 ------- Comment #12 from dmueller@novell.com 2006-11-17 06:07 MST ------- I'll try to summarize because I added a lot of confusion to the bugreport. The original reporter said that for him xscreensaver "hacks" ask for a password during unlocking. I can not reproduce that, but instead confused it with a similar, however unrelated problem. I don't think it has something to do with kpowersave (like comment #2) indicated. Daniel, does this bug still appear on Beta2 or newer for you? how can I reproduce it? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

And in reply to comment #4: I am using a laptop for my tests and I am switching the power profile very often. I think that this problem is gone for now. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

I think I didn't bother in the past since it didn't ask for a password anymore as in the initial report. Yet now that I think of it xscreensaver is present a lot! (This is also true for 10.1, btw.). I have that nice clock as the default kscreensaver, and every now and then there is that X logo x on the screen after a while and here on 10.2 Beta2 I even have totally different screensavers. Seems like it is still there but I have no idea how to reproduce reliably. My 10.1 computer is a desktop one and doesn't get its power profile changed ever, so that's maybe not the cause. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

This is IMO the KScreensaver with the blanked screen. Somehow the X come up, but this is definitely not the XScreensaver. There is simply no XScreensaver process running if the logo shows up. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=217362 ------- Comment #17 from danielstefanmader@web.de 2006-11-20 03:50 MST ------- I can trigger the xscreensaver reliably simply by closing the lid of my laptop. I have to enter my password then, too, in order to unlock. This should not happen either, IMHO. Under no circumstances there should ever be any other screensaver than the desktop one. It is confusing for the user. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
