[Bug 229037] New: powersave freezes
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=229037 Summary: powersave freezes Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: 32bit OS/Version: SuSE Linux 10.1 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Mobile Devices AssignedTo: behlert@novell.com ReportedBy: kssingvo@novell.com QAContact: qa@suse.de I'm having a HP nx8220 laptop. Running powersave with openSUSE 10.1 didn't had any problems with powersave (except I needed to switch graphical boot to text mode: vga=0x379 to vga=0x0 in "/boot/grub/menu.lst"). Fresh installation of openSUSE 10.2 results now in freezes when Suspending system. I see these two lines in the console, and then the system doesn't do anything anymore: Perparing hibernate... suspend: Snapshotting system I waited several minutes, and then did the 8 secs push of the powerbutton. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=229037 ------- Comment #2 from kssingvo@novell.com 2006-12-16 15:18 MST ------- I found the cause of the problem: it's the bcm43xx kernel module. If I disable to load this wlan module, then suspend to disk works flawless. But if I enable this (and this the default installation), then suspend doesn't work. Needless to say, that the suspend doesn't work neither, if I use the "ndiswrapper" instead of the bcm43xxx module. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Klaus: ndiswrapper is known to have problems. Although there's no real alternative for Broadcom WLAN-users we discourage to use that... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

It's a bug in the bcm43xxx module and thus a kernel bug. We don't workaround broken modules anymore. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=229037 ------- Comment #9 from kssingvo@novell.com 2007-01-08 10:10 MST ------- Well, it's my personal (private) property. If you need fast response, please ask people with same company laptops (as suggested in comment#1), if they can help you. My plans are to come to company by car on Thursday (Jan, 11th). If I don't forget the laptop then (and time permits), I can do so. But I'm not a kernel developer, and therefore never heard of netconsole. Please describe in detail how I could setup this device, what I should do. Thanks in advance. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

The documentation for netconsole (it's short and contains examples) is in Documentation/networking/netconsole.txt in the kernel sources (see e.g. http://lisa.cs.uni-potsdam.de/lxr/source/Documentation/networking/netconsole...). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=229037 ------- Comment #12 from kssingvo@novell.com 2007-01-11 07:22 MST ------- Sorry, but not possible. :-( I first tried the netconsole, but was not able to receive any message. Then I ask olh to help (maintainer of netconsole-tools), he wasn't able to receive any messages neither. Finally I ask kukuk what to do, and he told to try a docking station instead. Luckily I found one, but the serial device didn't send any data either: even it's present, it seems not to be connected at laptop side. Sorry, but first netconsole needs to be fixed to send the data. BTW If I send data via netcat from problematic host to the loghost, I can receive the data! It's not a problem of the transmission. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=229037 jbenc@novell.com changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|ASSIGNED |RESOLVED Resolution| |WONTFIX ------- Comment #13 from jbenc@novell.com 2007-01-11 10:40 MST ------- That's bad. I can't help here, I'm afraid. Closing as WONTFIX - if you find out new information in the future, reopen please. (Oh, and I shouldn't forget to mention that the current bcm43xx driver is going to be replaced by a new one in the future. However, I cannot say when it will happen.) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
