https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=788162 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=788162#c0 Summary: Enabeling users to change backgrounds and/or themes during bootime. Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE.org Version: unspecified Platform: Other OS/Version: SUSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: openFATE AssignedTo: tschmidt@suse.com ReportedBy: monkey9@iae.nl QAContact: roland.haidl@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:16.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/16.0 Compared with other distro's and MS products, opensuse users have no working tools to easily change the look of their screen during boot-time. I myself have spend over a week to find out how it should be done, and why it does not work. The boot sequence consists of 4 phases, all somehow controlled by different apps. 1)Boot-loader,2)Actual booting, 3)Login manager 4)Into desktop. There are various boot-loaders, various image controllers, various login-managers, and 1 startup-screen-manager, which works without problems.(KDE) Since longtime 'Brands' handle this, and the users tries to change ask for a tremendous effort, searching the internet for users that have succeeded to actually make a change to their liking. As other users, i like my pc, pad, laptop, pc to be beautifull from the start. Everything has to be consequent, like the 'brands', butt than my own. The screen has to look radiant and clean for me, and the transitions have to move smoothly. To achieve this is so difficult and takes so much time, that you have to sacrifice a lot of spare time and patience to get it done, if succes is an option that means.... Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Try to change the loginscreen, 2.Try to change the boot-loaqder screen, 3.Try to change the splash in between boot-loader screen, and login screen. Actual Results: Almost impossible to achieve, tools don't work, while the settings are alright. Tools only partial work. There aren't any tools at all. There is no description as to how to actually do it. Nobody in the opensuse mailinglist knows how to do it. Al have to e satisfied with what is offered. This is very poor for a distro with sophistication and standing, and makes people move to other distro's, that have simple tools to achieve this. So it does not have to be impossible. Expected Results: When looking for this, i encountered a lot of bugs, that are not obvious, but of main influence to the possibility to be able to perform the necessary actions to achieve the wanted changes. There is a theme: openSuSE-Elegant, (2009) which i like very much. I think it is the most beautiful openSUSE them that exists. I would very much like this theme smoothly perform, during boot-time. With tremendous effort i succeeded to achieve this for 3/4. Only the plymouth screen i can not influence that much, only background color changes. Now there is a gap between the ending of the boot-loader screen, and the first plymouth screen, resulting in the first messages from the boot-loader upto the resolution change, and than plymouth comes in. I will attach pictures later. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

If that is correct, I suggest you refer to openFate, which is the primary tool new feature requests. This is not enhancement of an existing component, which would fit to bugzilla. I suggest you go into openFate and I'm closing this bug as feature. Alternatively, you can start a wiki page on openSUSE.org with your findings and ask others for cooperation on the mailing lists. I believe that this could help others who are trying to achieve the same, too. You also mentioned "i encountered a lot of bugs"; this is not specific enough to allow to tackle the bugs. Could you, please, report the bugs separately, with description how they can be reproduced, so that we can tackle them one-by-one? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
