just opened the application, no settings changed - used defaults:
1) there was no menu on top
2) the main area of app was black and I could not see anything there

my java is:
java version "1.6.0_26"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_26-b03)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.1-b02, mixed mode)

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. run freeciv
2. start the game
3. check the screen
Actual Results:  
no menu, black main area window

Expected Results:  
should see menu and should see units/teritory on the main screen
