https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=232427 Summary: Lost Hot Keys, i.e. Select All (CTRL+A), Find (CTRL+F) Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: i586 OS/Version: Linux Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: kztyrvlq@warp.nfld.net QAContact: qa@suse.de Good Day . . . This is changed to major because some of the basic functionality of opensuse 10.2 is damaged. I have searched the internet, searched two forums, posted in two forums and I have not received an answer or a response. I found that this bug resembles, but is not similar to, the bug report 223800. This is part of my post. I hope it helps. As a normal user, I have lost the functionality of CTRL+A (Select All) and CTRL+F (Find) in my text editors and konqueror - A qualifier: In iconview, CTRL+A selects all the icons. For instance, The menu item Select All in Kwrite's Edit menu shows no hotkey combination. The area to the right is bare. The area is blank. Find shows CTRL+S. Strange! If text is in an editor, such as gedit, CTRL+F generates nothing. CTRL+S generates a box asking whether to Save or Find. Very strange! This is a fresh reinstall of 10.2. All the rest of the usual hotkey combinations seem to work, CTRL+C, CTRL+X, CTRL+V AND CTRL+P. Here are some facts: 1) As root user, everything works properly. 2) OpenOffice works properly. 3) Thunderbird works properly. Note: These two may incorporate code for the hotkeys while the text editors rely on keyboard configurations. 4) KDE and GNOME both the same. 5) xev reports the left control key as CONTROL_L. The actual keycode is correct at 37. 6) I am using Cherry Linux Master keyboard - switched options between generic 104 and this - same problems after an X restart and cold boot. 7) None of the Linux keyboard's multimedia keys work. The mute key has (keycode 160 = XF86AudioMute) which is probably standard but it mutes nothing. Not in alsa, kmix, or amixer, anything. kmix reports that volume up, down, and mute are not assigned but the Default key is greyed out (not enabled). 8) The language is set to English_GB in both YaST and KDE. Note: The CTRL+A (Select All) works as normal in this text area. I cannot see an option for attaching a graphic. It will display an Edit menu. Sorry, but this is show stopper. I am very text intensive and if this is not resolved I will plug in my (K)Ubuntu 6.10 removable hard drive and drop this to backup. My apologies. Good Luck. Please advise what you need attached. I received notification that this report was moved over to KDE. I realise that you probably know more about this situation than I do but may I draw your attention to item #4 and the preamble where I mention that this problem is present in both my desktop environments. Further investigation by myself suggests that the file that supplies the desktop environment(s) with keyboard shortcuts is not doing its' job. I can manually correct each application's keyboard shortcuts. It is one application after another, manually. The multimedia keys are entirely different. For instance KkeysymDB lists all the multimedia key combinations. xev reports, for example, the calculator key variable as XF86Calculator which matches KkeysymDB. But the key does not work! This is not really a KDE generated problem. Thank You for your attention to this matter. I appreciate it. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Bad News first - created new user and problem persists in KDE & GNOME - generic keyboard - cherry keyboard - US English & En_GB It seems you configure your keyboard twice (xorg.conf + KDE/Gnome). The latter overrides the settings in xorg.conf. So how did you configure it *exactly* in KDE? Maybe I can reproduce this issue.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=232427 ------- Comment #13 from kztyrvlq@warp.nfld.net 2007-01-14 10:03 MST ------- Good Day . . . Thank You for the reply. The keyboard was configured Cherry - US during the installation. My primary DE is KDE. I recollect that the keyboard area in KDE was not Cherry - US but Generic 104 - US when I began setting up KDE. If it was then I would not have reconfigured it. This was after a few reboots / restarts. Proceeded as Control Centre > Regional & Accessibility > Keyboard Layout > Cherry CyMotion Master Linux. Something else. I just changed the keyboard to Generic 104 in KDE 3.5.5 and I lost my custom configured XF86 settings for volume/mute. I changed back to Cherry CyMotion Master Linux and the XF86 volume/mute controls returned. That confirms the overriding effect of the DE. I installed OpenSUSE 10.2 that I downloaded directly from a mirror on 13Dec06. Unfortunately, I added many packages to the original install.
