[Bug 1087527] New: easy way install seems not to work with Nvidia mobile GTX 1060
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1087527 Bug ID: 1087527 Summary: easy way install seems not to work with Nvidia mobile GTX 1060 Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Distribution Version: Leap 42.3 Hardware: x86-64 OS: openSUSE 42.3 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: X11 3rd Party Driver Assignee: xorg-maintainer-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com Reporter: tutux84@onenetbeyond.org QA Contact: sndirsch@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- Created attachment 765474 --> http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/attachment.cgi?id=765474&action=edit nvidia zypper install Hi, Symptoms -------- Installing Nvidia drivers on my new Optimus laptop break the graphical internal output after reboot. Before reboot: I have a clean 2560x1440 resolution. After reboot: ugly 800*600 resolution. The zypper install output throw some errors but no hard fail (see attachments). Reproducibility --------------- Always: have been reinstalling my test partition at least 5 times in the past weeks Steps ----- 1) install bumblebee. I had to append a kernel parameter to make the system boot, see https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:NVIDIA_Bumblebee, "Preparation", the note about Sky Lake devices and the indicated Bumblebee bug tracker reference for more information. 2) follow the easy install guide for Nvidia drivers with Bumblebee, from the Opensuse wiki My system --------- a Gigabyte Aero 14w v7 laptop with Optimus Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-7700HQ CPU @ 2.80GHz (Sky Lake) Nvidia GTX 1060 (Pascal) uname -a: Linux linux-8kce.suse 4.4.120-45-default #1 SMP Wed Mar 14 20:51:49 UTC 2018 (623211f) x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux Nvidia drivers version: see attachment Kernel sources installed Some text logs -------------- Bumblebee status (before and after driver install+reboot = same status): "Bumblebee status: Ready (3.2.1). Basically all kernel modules have to be rebuilt with the updated kernel. Otherwise the vulnerability remains. Though, the previously built kernel module should be usable as is with the new kernel. Maybe nvidia module does some strange thing accessing these stuff we intentionally changed via the kernel update... Try to re-install nvidia package so that the rebuild of modules is triggered. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Then just the weak-updates symlinks from the 4.4.76 kernel tree cannot be created since that kernel misses these symbols. That should be fine unless you boot this old kernel. Seems you're building against 4.4.120 kernel but are still booting an older kernel, right? http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1087527 http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1087527#c13 --- Comment #13 from Vladimir FROMENT <tutux84@onenetbeyond.org> --- Nope, I'm booting on the recent kernel: uname -r : 4.4.120-45-default rpm -qa | grep kernel-default : kernel-default-4.4.120-45.1.x86_64 kernel-default-4.4.76-1.1.x86_64 kernel-default-devel-4.4.120-45.1.x86_64 I did not do anything fancy on this system. It is a test partition I set up to troubleshoot this issue and to allow myself to break everything without impacting my regular Leap installation, which is on the same computer, same SSD, but a different partition. For this test system, I basically just installed all the automatic updates, bumblebee (+ added the kernel parameters I talked about in my initial report) and the nvidia drivers. I think that's all I did. So from my understanding there are remains of the old kernel which are interfering with the Nvidia kernel module compilation. There might have been an issue during an update. I don't know how to explain it, but if need be I can reinstall the system from scratch to see if it is reproducable. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Sorry, I haven't carefully read the initial description. This is a Optimus system (Intel graphics, NVIDIA hardware only available for rendering). It's unsupported by the RPMs provided on NVIDIA's server. It's weird to see that intel modesetting isn't functional on your system though. For Intel Skylake support you need drm-kmp-default or a kernel-of-the-day. Kernel 4.4 is just too old for Skylake. But removing drm-kmp-default on Skylake systems looks like a wrong advice. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
