[Bug 298338] New: dmraid based installation on FSC rx220 not possible
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=298338 Summary: dmraid based installation on FSC rx220 not possible Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Alpha 7 Platform: x86 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: Winfrid.Tschiedel@fujitsu-siemens.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com CC: daniel.rahn@novell.com Found By: Beta-Customer Since openSUSE 10.3 alpha5 a dmraid based installation is not possible. There is a rx220 available at Novell. Following items where tested : 1) Installation to a disk with already allocated and formatted (EXT3) partitions. 1a) Partition is formatted and empty - assignment of partition without format is not possible 1b) Assignment with format works - but openSUSE fails to format the partition system code : -3030 2) Installation on an empty disk, I just succeeded once doing this, all the other times I ended up with system code : -3030 And I have no idea, what was different at that time, when I succeeded with the start of the installation. 3) The only time when I succeeded installing openSUSE 10.3 alpha# ( #: > 4 ) the first boot failed, because none of the partitions was found ( partitionname /dev/mapper/pdc_......._part# ) 4) Please read also Bug 279837, Novell tells you during installation that incase of dmraid only a MBR can be written - in case of rhel5 or fedora there is also a bug, but grub is able to write a boot-record to the partition, how to do this is described in a gentoo howto, please read http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Install_Gentoo_with_NVRAID_using_dmraid Installing GRUB Method 1 This method does not work on openSUSE Note: I suppose that you can reproduce the above describe problems on any RAID configuration supported by dmraid ( I did not all above decribed steps on a FSC Econel 100 S2, which has a ICH8R chipset with SATA Raid and LSI firmware ) Additional information : Please see also Bugzilla Entry 224219 at RedHat RHEL5 dmraid panic with isw metadata (ESB2/ICH8) Description of problem (224219) : A WS3990 configured with Intel dmraid1 will kernel panic if any of the drives are pulled the system will not boot regardless of which drive is pulled 0 or 1. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): kernel 2.6.18-1.3002.el5 x86_64 dmraid-1.0.0.rc13-2.el5 How reproducible: 100% Steps to Reproduce: 1. raid1 configured in the Intel raid bios. 2. Install RCS7 on a Dell WS390. 3. Remove any drive system kernel panics upon reboot. This problem was also reproducible with openSUSE 10.2 According to my tests, the problems are independant of the used RAID firmware ( Intel or LSI ) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

From initial description line started with '3)' says that you've installed openSuSE ( alpha > 4 ) and it failed on first boot. So that at least partition of disk and boot loader configuration should be written into logs.

You see the issue has a long history of tests on my side, and unfortunately the data of this only test, where I succeeded in getting data written to disk, are not anymore available. And I have no idea, what was different at that time. Tomorrow I will start new tests using openSUSE 10.3 Beta1. But I cannot promise that I will be able to produce y2logs. Currently I think, that there is only one way to get an openSUSE 10.3 in this environment installed : I can install openSUSE 10.2 and run in openSUSE 10.2 a system update to 10.3 ( upgrade installation did not work until now, because the installer did not detect any system on the disk ). After openSUSE 10.3 Beta3 is available, the installation works, as long as you write the bootrecord to the MBR.
But it is not possible to write the boot record to a partition.
Also it is not possible to create with grub a bootrecord, for this issue please see incident 279837.
Note if you try to write a BR from rhel5.1 or fedora 7, you get an error message, saying that the partition has an invalid signature.
After a reboot of rhel5.1 I was able to write with the RHEL grub a bootrecord to the partition, but the system does not boot ( boot stops in a GRUB prompt ). Please check 279837, I found now a method to write a bootrecord with openSUSE grub, but I am not sure if this method will work for all possible RAID configurations. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
