[Bug 244838] New: wlan-kmp-default is missing Requires: kernel
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=244838 Summary: wlan-kmp-default is missing Requires: kernel Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Alpha 0plus Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Other AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: dominique.leuenberger@tmf-group.com QAContact: qa@suse.de according the everywhere mentioned 'How to build a KMP', all KMPs should 'Require: kernel' for easy reference. http://www.suse.de/~agruen/KMPM/KernelModulePackagesManual-CODE10.pdf At least on my system (latest factory, kernel just got updated to 2.6.20-2) this is not the case for wlan-kmp-default. Either a documentation error in the mentioned manual or the provided KMPs should be updated to correspond to the documentation. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Dependency browser shows that only the following packages require "kernel": iscsitarget microcode_ctl The *-kmp packages require kernel-$flavor. And wlan-kmp already does that, too. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

This would be clearly wrong because all dependencies are computed automatically, but I cannot find the place in the document where it says that and the samples look correct, too. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Indeed, it is a bit hidden and I assumed it will be documentation not keeping up with reality. The Paragraph I especially refer to in the document mentioned in comment #0 is Paragraph 10 (page 9) ### 10 Querying Installed Kernel Module Packages Each kernel module package requires the “kernel” symbol. RPM can be used to get a list of installed kernel module packages with: $ rpm -q --whatrequires kernel novell-example-kmp-smp-1.1_2.6.16_rc1_2-0 ### If I was to build a KMP now and installed it, made this test I would be highly worried about my kmp not fullfilling this requirement. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=244838 ------- Comment #4 from dominique.leuenberger@tmf-group.com 2007-02-14 00:13 MST ------- the 'Requires: kernel' statement was interpreted by me and not explicitly mentioned in the doc. But to achieve what the query suggests me, it would be required. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=244838 ------- Comment #5 from andreas.hanke@gmx-topmail.de 2007-02-14 00:54 MST ------- This is a documentation bug. In the past, %suse_kernel_module_package used to add "Requires: kernel", but this has been changed to "Requires: kernel-$flavor" because of a bug where zypp tended to install multiple kernels, and needs to be reflected in the documentation. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Why not assign it to 'Documentation' then? Just closing it does not solve the issue that people are sent to a documentation that is not true (anymore). And we're talking about a document by Novell, not just one out of the community. So I think Novell should care about it. I repoened the report, changed all the attributes to reflect what it should be. It would be a pity to lose all the discussion above. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
