This issue could be related to new EEDID probing in xorg-server 1.6. Then it would be monitor/display panel related. Does this issue still occur when adding

Option "NoDDC2"

to 'Section "Device"' or your /etc/X11/xorg.conf?

I have since downgraded Xorg on the MacBook Pro to the version in the OSS repo. However, I am willing to upgrade to X11:Xorg and try editing the xorg.conf as you suggest. I should be able to report back this weekend as to whether it fixes the problem or not.
