[Bug 386721] New: 10.3 boot configuration messed up
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=386721 Summary: 10.3 boot configuration messed up Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Final Platform: 64bit OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: YaST2 AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: rkade@encoco.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- Installation on a 64Bit Quad-Core with Vista on one disk and a new second disk. Tech. details will be attached as soon as I get on this machine again. Installation of Linux in sdb2 leaves Vista (sda2) unbootable!? (system hangs with some chain loader message) Installation procedure doens't give one a choice of where to install the boot code. The MBR of the first disk is modified without consent. I had to restore the MBR to get Vista up again. Manual boot config of Grub in Yast2 is unclear about which MBR will be overwritten. Selecting Lilo allows to specify which disk to modify, but one cannot enter a section for Vista as the section name is ignored in the Yast2 dialog. Proposals of Lilo and Grub don't include the Windows system. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

AFAIK, "MBR" in this context means "MBR of the first hard disk". I am not sure if this gets anything more explicit if there are multiple hard disks - I just have one in that test machine. But using the MBR of another disk might require support from the BIOS and/or another bootloader (e.g., the Windows Vista bootloader in your example), and that would make it no more useful than just installing grub in the /boot partition of the newly installed Linux, so that choice would be not too useful here. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

This is the name that will be displayed in the boot menu. IIRC Grub permits free text, while Lilo is somewhat more limited (shorter and not all characters allowed). If your Windows partition shows up as a bootloader section, you can change the name here. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Inside Yast2 and for Lilo or Grub, this is not shown with Windows. to comment 3: To my understanding every disk has a MBR. I just got very scared about overwriting that Windows MBR for some bad experiences with SuSE Linux and that's why I prefer to have that on another disk. Years ago I even used a floppy for that and that was fine for me. Yes and again I was proofen right with being scared about this. Your attachment doesn't show where the MBR is stored. Even if you were right about that MBR refers to the first disk only, it wouldn't hurt to make that clear in Yast. Btw. you can check all those choices and where is all the boot code stored then? In every checked location? For your info. I can select the boot disk in the BIOS, I just have to press F8 and select the disk. I find that very useful. You are right, if booting via the first MBA would always work flawlessly, it wouldn't make a difference, but it doesn't. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
