[Bug 1053553] New: Add VirtualBox guest extensions ISO image
http://bugzilla.suse.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1053553 Bug ID: 1053553 Summary: Add VirtualBox guest extensions ISO image Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Tumbleweed Version: Current Hardware: All OS: Other Status: NEW Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: Virtualization:Other Assignee: virt-bugs@suse.de Reporter: Ralf.Friedl@online.de QA Contact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Virtualbox has an ISO image with guest drivers for various operating systems. This can be inserted into the virtual guest CD drive to install the extension. For example, the current one is at http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/5.1.26/VBoxGuestAdditions_5.1.26.i... It would be nice to have an optional package containing this ISO file. Even better for me would be to have an image with just the windows drivers, but that would require to rebuild the ISO. Currently, the VirtualBox from virtualbox-qt can download this file, but it has some disadvantages: - Each user downloads this file to his home directory, potentially resulting in multiple copies. - Old versions are not automatically deleted, as they are placed in a hidden sub directory where people usually don't think to look. - Also, not everybody uses the VirtualBox program. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

--- Comment #2 from Ralf Friedl
Oracle releases the extensions ISO under a PUEL (Personal Use and Evaluation License), but the only code that can be distributed by openSUSE needs to be either GPL or similar license. Are you sure? The PUEL at https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/VirtualBox_PUEL explicitly states that is covers only the Extension Pack, not the Guest Additions. § 1 Subject of Agreement. This Agreement governs your use of the binary software package called “Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack” This “Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack” contains extensions for the VirtualBox running on the host, it contains enhanced USB support, RDP host and so on. This is the file at http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/5.1.28/Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extens... . It is not an ISO, it is a compressed tar file that contains files for Solaris, Windows and Linux 32/64 Bit.
The MIT license used by most of VirtualBox is OK, but a restricted license is not. According to https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads the main part of VirtualBox is GPL2, not MIT.
I'm not talking about the extension pack, but about the Guest Additions, the equivalent to the packages virtualbox-guest-*. Oracle has a download the contains the iso file and is GPL2: $ rpm -qilp http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/rpm/opensuse/13.2/x86_64/VirtualBo... | fgrep 'License|iso' License : GPLv2 /usr/share/virtualbox/VBoxGuestAdditions.iso -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
