[Bug 485401] New: Installer insists on deleting existing LVM volumes and groups when doing a fresh LVM-based installation
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=485401 User mdmalik01@gmail.com added comment https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=485401#c440812 Summary: Installer insists on deleting existing LVM volumes and groups when doing a fresh LVM-based installation Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.1 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: mdmalik01@gmail.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9.0.7) Gecko/2009021910 Firefox/3.0.7 (.NET CLR 3.5.30729) See below for details. I was trying to install openSUSE 11.1 final on an existing Linux system that has 2 hard drives, the second hard drive holds all of my data and backups. I only want to delete the OS on the first hard drive. I will also not dare to proceed with the install when I have no way of keeping my existing data. I guess I will have to keep using Fedora for now because that distro doesn't require that I lose all of my data. Also, I sure don't feel like disconnecting the 2nd drive, doing the install, and then trying to get the new OS configured to see the 2nd drive via some LVM configs that may or may not work. This is lame. +++ This bug was initially created as a clone of Bug #440812 +++ I was going to try out OpenSUSE 11.1 Beta 3 by installing to an external disk, using an LVM setup. However, the installer insists on deleting my existing LVM partitions on my main OpenSUSE system, which is on the computer's first hard disk. How to reproduce: 0) Make sure that your computer has an existing LVM-based OpenSUSE installation, and that you have another disk on which to install a fresh LVM-based system. 1) In the "Suggested Partitioning" screen, choose "LVM Based" and press "Create Partition Setup...". 2) In the "Preparing Hard Disk: Step 1" screen, choose the target disk. Press Next. 3) In the "Preparing Hard Disk: Step 2" screen, press "Use entire hard disk", check "Create LVM Based Proposal" and press Next. 4) Inspect the actions listed in the "Suggested Partioning" screen. Desired outcome: The list should not propose to delete any existing logical volumes or volume groups on any disk other than the target disk. Actual outcome: The list contains the following destructive actions concerning my existing OpenSUSE system: - Delete logical volume /dev/system/home (300.00 GB) - Delete logical volume /dev/system/root (20.00 GB) - Delete logical volume /dev/system/swap (3.00 GB) - Remove volume group system I have not dared proceed any further in the installation process to see whether the installer would actually attempt to destroy my existing system. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: Copied from bug #440812: 0) Make sure that your computer has an existing LVM-based OpenSUSE installation, and that you have another disk on which to install a fresh LVM-based system. 1) In the "Suggested Partitioning" screen, choose "LVM Based" and press "Create Partition Setup...". 2) In the "Preparing Hard Disk: Step 1" screen, choose the target disk. Expected Results: Something like: Existing volume group found on second drive -- do you want to keep that data and mount that drive when we reboot? (YES/NO) This is a major problem for people who want to keep their existing data. I will never use openSUSE as long as the installation functions like this. Losing customer data is totally unacceptable as the default without any other option. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

You already have a volume group with that name so the proposal is to delete the existing volume group no matter on what disk or disks it is. You can ignore the proposal and manually create a partition setup. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 440812 *** https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=440812 -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I have a volume group called VolGroup01. Do you honestly want every common user to have to know exactly how to setup a proper partition layout? One would have to be a Linux expert for that. Why is the DEFAULT TO DESTROY MY DATA!? It is also not at all clear to the user that doing a manual partition setup will not destroy the existing data on the 2nd drive -- and there is no obvious way to prevent that from happening, even in manual setup it still wants to delete the partition. This is ridiculous, and the fact that you closed this issue without any regard to customer convenience during the install process is certainly the evidence that Novell really doesn't give a damn about it's customers who would be paying for the enterprise product. No wonder my CNE became useless on the market. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

However, a change is not easy to implement, as there are conflicting strategies, how to solve this. I suggest that you open a feature request at: https://features.opensuse.org/ Thanks for contributing to openSUSE! -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
