[Bug 848775] New: Install grub2-branding takes "forever"
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=848775 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=848775#c0 Summary: Install grub2-branding takes "forever" Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 13.1 Version: RC 2 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: rschweikert@suse.com QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Installation of the grub2-branding-openSUSE package takes "forever". I believe this is related to disk scanning. The system has 1 60GB SSD, this is used as the system disk and has two >1TB spinning disks that are configure with LVM to store data, /home, music files etc. During the initial setup of the install the installer was already spinning for a rather long period of time when detecting the disk configuration and the LVM setup. Install of the kernel packages also took a long time. But grub2-branding-openSUSE tops them all. After more than 45 minutes this is still not done. The drive light on the machine is on indicating disk activity. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

There was another message on the screen when I killed it, but I couldn't get a picture taken fast enough. There was something else missing. It looks like perl bootloader goes into an endless loop somewhere along the line. I then installed 12.3 from scratch on the same system and installation completed without a problem. Thus I believe that this is not a hardware issue. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

When I initially attempted the upgrade from 12.3 to 13.1 on this system, the 12.3 installation was still using grub as the bootloader instead of grub2. I think this is a key part of the problem. After a fresh install of 12.3, with grub2 as the bootloader, the upgrade worked without any problems. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

One is a laptop with a 500G drive with 12.3 and Windows 7 prior. It did not seem unusually long. The other system is a desktop one with 4 hard drives, 500G, 650G, and two 1T. It has 12.3 with kde3, 12.3 with kde4, Windows XP prior, and there are three point I noticed excessive times: Searching for Linux partitions: ~20 minutes Configuration, don't remember exact, but Grub related - ~30 minutes grub2-branding-openSUSE a full hour Extream compared with 12.3 -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I removed the "Probe Foreign OS", and it set up the boot loader very quickly, but all it has is just 13.1. The other versions of openSUSE are not accessible to boot, nor is XP. I'll try to re-establish grub access to them with Yast-Bootloader from the running system. Not a good solution. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It took about one minute which was requiring an hour during the install. So there is a fix, but there really should be a fix that can be run prior to the install, or an update to the DVD ISO. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
