[Bug 572991] New: Very broken update of kernel in 11.1 (to 2.6.27.42)
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=572991 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=572991#c0 Summary: Very broken update of kernel in 11.1 (to 2.6.27.42) Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: YaST2 AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: zajec5@gmail.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Opera/9.80 (X11; Linux i686; U; pl) Presto/2.2.15 Version/10.10 I was informed about available kernel update to 2.6.27.42 so I processed upgraded using standard KDE3 update tool and rebooted. After that X didn't start, I didn't have eth0 any more, and no support for vfat. The reason of problems was that zypper updated only 1 of 3 kernel packages. Please see following: # rpm -qa | grep kernel kernel-pae-2.6.27.39-0.2.1 kernel-pae-base-2.6.27.42-0.1.1 kernel-pae-extra-2.6.27.39-0.2.1 As the result I booted into 2.6.27.42 kernel but I lacked *a lot* of kernel modules. Even worse was that I couldn't bring manually downloaded 2.6.27.42 packages from other machine as I didn't have vfat support. well, you need to install kernel-pae and kernel-pae-extra too.
Well, yes, that's what I wrote :)
did you use the regular online updater? did you do anything special or just clicked on install all?
Nothing special. Just ordinary update using KDE3's applet (kupdateapplet I think). Standard "Install" click, nothing special. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I think the reason can be that 1) kernel-pae-2.6.27.42-0.1.1.i586.rpm depends on kernel-pae-extra-2.6.27.42-0.1.1.i586.rpm
It does not: $ rpm -qRp kernel-pae-extra-2.6.27.42-0.1.1.i586.rpm | grep kernel kernel-pae_i586 = 2.6.27.42-0.1.1
2) kernel-pae-extra-2.6.27.42-0.1.1.i586.rpm depends on kernel-pae-2.6.27.42-0.1.1.i586.rpm (cross dependency)
The dependencies are kernel-pae-extra -> kernel-pae -> kernel-pae-base and have always been this way in 11.1.

What I wanted to paste was: $ rpm -qRp kernel-pae-2.6.27.42-0.1.1.i586.rpm | grep kernel kernel-pae-base_i586 = 2.6.27.42-0.1.1 I.e. kernel-pae does not depend on kernel-pae-base. And the patch lists all the kernel packages: $ grep 'kernel-pae.*2\.6\.27\.42' repoparts/updateinfo-kernel-1749.xml <package name="kernel-pae" arch="i586" version="2.6.27.42" release="0.1.1"> <filename>kernel-pae-2.6.27.42-0.1.1.i586.rpm</filename> <package name="kernel-pae-base" arch="i586" version="2.6.27.42" release="0.1.1"> <filename>kernel-pae-base-2.6.27.42-0.1.1.i586.rpm</filename> <package name="kernel-pae-extra" arch="i586" version="2.6.27.42" release="0.1.1"> <filename>kernel-pae-extra-2.6.27.42-0.1.1.i586.rpm</filename> Strange. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I might have a solution to the above problem: I had the same problem as described above, when I ran the OpenSuse Updater (not Yast). It recommended a security update updating my Kernel 2.6.27.39 to 2.6.27.42. The update was done at 2010-01-25 16:13:19 see attached zypp-history log file I am using OpenSuse 11.1, the output of uname -a is: Linux fritz 2.6.27.42-0.1-pae #1 SMP 2010-01-06 16:07:25 +0100 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux After the next reboot I could not use my usb-mouse any more, nor was the network connection working. We found out that only one update patch was installed. So we tried to manually install them which failed at first instance because the root-directory ( / ) did not have enough disc-space. After removing some cruft the manual installation was successful. So: maybe the update fails SILENTLY if there's not enough disk-space without reverting the kernel-updates that have already been performed...
