[Bug 605478] New: X Server freeze after some time
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=605478 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=605478#c0 Summary: X Server freeze after some time Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.3 Version: Milestone 6 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.2 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: X.Org AssignedTo: bnc-team-xorg-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: rkrell@gmx.net QAContact: xorg-maintainer-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- Created an attachment (id=361961) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=361961) Xorg.0.log.old of the frozen session User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.2.3) Gecko/20100401 SUSE/3.6.3-1.2 Firefox/3.6.3 I'd like to describe it more particular, but I have no idea what happened. Shortly after logging into KDE 4.4.3 (composite enabled) there was a freeze, which got into the system in several steps. The only extra steps I did was opening konsole, did some git actions, after that konsole did not echo keys I pressed, but the menu opened by the mouse still worked for a few seconds. The desktop became more and more unrespopnsive, at the end the mouse pointer disappeared and X was dead. I attach the old Xorg log. Using the same configuration as in bug #605171. It is very similar to bug https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=615649. I was originally getting 2 types of freezes: * one, a complete freeze, where the computer still had my windows visible, but the mouse pointer would not move, nor would the computer respond to any key strokes. The only way forward was to power down. * the other where one by one, applications stopped responding. The mouse pointer still moved, it was usually possible to change desktops, but it was not possible to open new windows. Some windows would continue to respond for a long time (minutes) such as terminal windows. Most others would not. It was possible using CTRL-SHIFT-F1 etc to swap to the standard consoles and log in. But attempts to shut down were unsuccessful. You might get the shutdown message, but then no further response. Eventually the only way forward was to power down. Using "nomodeset" at boot time seemed to prevent the first of these 2 - the complete freeze. Given that bug 615649 talked about the Intel video driver being part of the culprit, I installed the ATI proprietary driver. But this did not prevent the freezes (but it did improve video performance enormously). As is the system is essentially unusable. I have reverted to my 11.2 installation (I have it on a separately bootable partition). This is the system I have been using for almost a year. Prior to that a Dell Inspiron notebook running 11.1. A little about my computer. It is a Dell Studio XPS with an i7 920 core CPU, 8GB Ram, twin 640 GB (mirrored using Dells SATA Bios) WD disks, a Radeon HD4550 graphics card, internal Bluetooth and IEEE 1394, a DVD+-RW, Gigabit network card, 82801 Sound card and a CX 23885 TV card. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Whenever I see a relevant change in the development master I rebuild the package with it, but there hasn't been anything new. The update from 6.13.0 to 6.13.1 improved the stability a bit, but it isn't still perfect and I get similar effects like you described.

Exactly. Additional I got to note the second point, where the mouse still moves, but the desktop freezes more and more and freezes anyway. I made a separate report at freedesktop.org, because Suse can't do so much here, I guess: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29166 You might post your configuration, logs and experiences with this there, too. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=605478 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=605478#c3 --- Comment #3 from Stefan Dirsch <sndirsch@novell.com> 2010-08-05 12:00:15 UTC --- David, this bug is about Xpress 200 hardware, whereas you have a HD4550 GPU. That's a completely different GPU family and a complete different code path in the driver I'm pretty sure. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

For the moment I recommend using Stefan Dirsch's well-maintained and quite stable Xorg:X11 repo for your distribution. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Hence the issue needs to be fixed upstream. You can report the issue via the ATI mailing list http://lists.freedesktop.org/mailman/listinfo/xorg-driver-ati or X.Org's bugzilla https://bugs.freedesktop.org/ (product: xorg, component: Driver/Radeon) -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=605478 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=605478#c6 --- Comment #6 from David Mills <djmills@netspace.net.au> 2010-09-12 22:08:45 EST --- After sticking with my 11.2 partition since my last post I decided to see if anything had changed with 11.3. I booted 11.3, ran OnlineUpdate, selected all available patches and proceeded. I noted that both the kernel and the x11-server were among the updates. The system froze during the update. I had to repeat the process several times, each time managing to install a few more patches before a freeze. Finally all were installed. I then installed a new ATI Radeon HD driver and restarted the system. It stayed up and unfrozen for several hours without an issue. Much longer than it has ever lasted before. Now I have to decide whether to bother trying to upgrade my main OS partition to 11.3 (the partition I have used for 11.3 is not big enough to install all the software I use). I might not for the moment. All the features I had hoped to get from 11.3 that I wasn't able to get working in 11.2, I now have working well with 11.2. So there is little imperative to change any more. Unless someone can list a bunch of good reasons to upgrade. Thanks for people's help. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
