That might make debugging harder, but we can give it a try. Jiri, this seems to be related to character devices being added, but it also might be a sysfs/kobject thing. Can you try to drive this? Possibly Greg or Jiri (Kosina) might have some ideas ... This issue appeared first in 2.6.18.1 and is probably still present. Pty don't use indexes, so the !devpts doesn't fire, so only thing needed to be done is free in the shutdown. In vt, the racy check and destroy in close is deferred to shutdown which is called *once* on real destroy. Here we do all the deferred work (except taking tty_mutex, which is unneeded now) + calling the same tty shutdown as all other drivers.
