[Bug 266968] New: initiate suspend to disk out of standby mode
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=266968 Summary: initiate suspend to disk out of standby mode Product: SUSE Linux 10.1 Version: Final Platform: i686 OS/Version: SuSE Linux 10.1 Status: NEW Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: estellnb@lycos.at QAContact: qa@suse.de It would certainly be very expedient if the system could autonomously initiate a suspend to disk after having stayed in standby or s2ram mode for a certain amount of time: * If the battery had already been low and the laptop was accidentally forgotten in s2ram mode for a week or more the computer is likely to welcome its owner with a disk recovery on startup (runs out of battery; like a crash). * If the computer is provided with an external power supply but does not have any battery and its user forgets that he had just initiated a suspend to ram rather than a suspend to disk he may accidentally unplug the laptop to take it away with the result that everything is lost (unplugged->power supply interrupted; would not mind if suspended to disk). * Leaving a computer in s2ram mode for too long is a waste of energy. The thing about these incidents is that the user does often not know for how long he will be away when initiating a suspend to ram. solution: A time counter should automatically wake the machine up after a certain time in standby mode (e.g. half a day or several hours) to resuspend persistently onto disk. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

What we can do now is first write a suspend to disk image, but then do suspend to RAM. So if your battery runs out while in suspend to RAM, the machine will still be able to resume from disk. This is not perfect, but the closest we can probably get right now to implement this feature. There is still work to be done on the infrastructure for "suspend to both", but the general bits are in place in 10.3 alphas. Since this is reported against 10.1, it is a clear WONTFIX, we cannot port that solution back with a reasonable amount of work to 10.1. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
