The fd0* device nodes are not supported by resmgr, and therefore no access is granted to the local user. The kernel doesn't export information about these nodes and HAL+resmgr does not know anything about the nodes. Only root can use these nodes. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Does you comment mean that you cannot do anything about this? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

There is a dumb hack in udev to create /dev/fd0u1440 along with /dev/fd0, but nothing keeps track of this, not the kernel, not sysfs, not udev, not HAL. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Alternatively someone could fix the floppy driver. It does have have the information about possible drive types after all. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Also I'm sure, that upstream HAL will not take any weird hacks, to work around a broken driver with missing sysfs support. Someone has to fix the floppy driver, to export the floppy-devices to sysfs, and all would just work without any hack in udev and HAL and ... I have no idea besides using the /dev/fd0 device-node with the floppy formatter, or running it as root. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=253734 ------- Comment #13 from llunak@novell.com 2007-05-03 07:05 MST ------- If I force kfloppy to use /dev/fd0 if using /dev/fd0u1440 fails, is that guaranteed to work, or will there be any catch? Presumably there's a reason it doesn't just use /dev/fd0. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=253734 ro@novell.com changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- AssignedTo|ro@novell.com |llunak@novell.com ------- Comment #14 from ro@novell.com 2007-05-06 15:09 MST ------- AFAIK: fd0 will use what is detected from either the drive capabilities or the previous formatting of the media. For example using /dev/fd0 for formatting a disk that was formatted for 720k before will produce a 720k media, while using /dev/fd0u1440 will produce a 1440k media. For the most common case it will work however.
